I'm
A Believer
Michael Nesmith
London 1974 [no label, 1CD]
Live
at the Roundhouse, London, April 28, 1974.
Somebody yelled for
I'm A Believer. Nesmith gives an audible sigh. You'd think after four
critically-acclaimed solo albums, the Monkees could be forgotten? Here
was a singer-songwriter worthy of that title yet despite the sarcasm of
his 1973 album title, the hits never kept coming for Michael Nesmith.
He does concede and
starts the show with his highest charting single, Joanne [#21 on Billboard],
and the oft-covered Some of Shelley's Blues for a good one-two. Then,
in a way, the "hits" just keep on comin'. Silver Moon, Different Drum,
followed by Propinquity and then Roll With The Flow, one of the last songs
he deemed worthy to release as a 7-inch single back in the days of vinyl.
They are all wonderful, slow burn ballads.
Not sure about the
entire lineup but Red Rhodes is here. His right hand and steel guitarist
propping up the band [?]. Might even be a duo as I don't hear a drummer
anywhere.
But here he is in
London, promoting what would be his final album for RCA, Pretty Much Your
Standard Ranch Stash, countrified ballads and slow rockers. This show
is anything but standard. Nesmith talks a lot. He never quite connects
and you wished he'd sung more songs. He closes the show with a lengthy
speech about his new concept which would be the next album, The Prison,
and sings one song, Marie's Theme, from that album.
Nesmith never became
a rock star but in many ways he was a pioneer. He would involve himself
in multi-media starting a company called Pacific Arts and make "video
records" before MTV was even imagined. In fact, Nesmith conceptualised
something called Pop Clips and sold it to Time Warner who developed it
into MTV. Nesmith's single Cruisin' was the first video of the channel.
This final bit we
read from Wikipedia:
"Pacific Arts Video
became a pioneer in the home video market, producing and distributing
a wide variety of videotaped programs. Pacific Arts eventually ceased
operations after an acrimonious contract dispute with PBS over home video
licensing rights and payments for several series, including Ken Burns'
The Civil War. On February 3, 1999, a jury awarded Nesmith $46.8 million
in compensatory and punitive damages, prompting his widely-quoted comment,
'It's like finding your grandmother stealing your stereo. You're happy
to get your stereo back, but it's sad to find out your grandmother is
a thief.' PBS appealed the ruling and a settlement was reached with the
results kept confidential."
In 1974, he was still
struggling to be recognised as a singer-songwriter. Who'd have imagined
in the end, he'd reap its material rewards.
Sound quality is
very good, though not excellent with some cuts here and there. This is
an FM broadcast.
