A
concert in Liverpool that's not about the Beatles but fellow musician
and one-time Apple label mate, now Sir John Tavener [The Whale and Celtic
Requiem were both on Apple]. This was the world premiere of his new work,
Requiem.

The Requiem is the
funeral mass of the Christian faith, a prayer for the salvation of souls.
Popular requiems are Mozart's and Verdi's. We can now add Tavener's.
Hosted inside Liverpool's
circular-shaped Metropolitan Cathedral, Sir John positioned the players
in a "cruciform" with the solo cellist Josephine Knight [of The Protecting
Veil fame] raised in the centre. At either ends were the strings, choir,
soprano Elin Manahan Thomas and tenor Andrew Kennedy on one side and,
on the other, the brass instruments. On left and right were the percussion
which would let fly fury and thunder during the Dies Irae [Day of Wrath
or Judgement Day] movement.
As Sir John, 64,
had been ill he was not present for this performance but sent a message
which was read before the concert. Tavener described this multi-faith
and multi-textured work's fourth movement as "the... ferocious cosmic
dance, juxtaposing almost tantric adoration and extinction in the fiercely
beautiful Hindu goddess Kali and the Judgement of Christ in the year Zero.
The seventh and final movement pulsates with settings of one phrase in
Sanskrit, in Hebrew, in Greek and in Arabic... I Am That... I Am God."
The BBC, which broadcast
this, had described the Requiem as an attempt "to reconcile the world's
warring religions through music and the contemplation of death." Tavener
used text from the Requiem mass, the Muslim Koran, the Sufi text and Hindi
text from the Upanishad. Sir John is an Orthodox Christian.
Most reviewers have
said that the work was an attempt to reconcile all religions in ecumenical
spirit and, as the supplied text states, "our glory lies where we cease
to exist." So the centrepiece of the movement is the Dies Irae where the
percussionist, choir and soloists drown out the cellist which Tavener
suggests is the divine "primordial light" of life. The point where body
and spirit are separated. This crescendo is followed by a beautiful motif
played on the cello and followed closely by the soprano until both blend
into one.
The whole work with
seven movements lasts just 35 minutes about as long as the second side
of Abbey Road. Think how that united pop fans for decades as one of the
best albums. Then hope that more will listen to Tavener's Requiem and
give peace a chance.
