FLAMING LIPS
The Fearless Freaks - Film Premiere Bonus Bootleg Giveaway
8 Live Flaming Lips Tracks 1986-1996
[no label 1CD]

This is the CD that was given away on Sunday during the South by South West film and music festival on March 13 2005, at the premiere of the new documentary by Bradley Beesley featuring the Flaming Lips called The Fearless Freaks. The intro from Wayne will tell you all you need to know.

Here is the tracklist:

1. Wayne's Intro
2. With You (Molly's, Boston 1986)
3. Can't Stop The Spring (Norman, OK 1988)
4. Shine On Sweet Jesus (Ausburg, Germany 1990 or 91)
5. Space Age Love Song (Chicago, Lollapalooza 1994)
6. Moth In The Incubator (Ventura, CA 1995)
7. When You Smile (Tree's, Dallas 1996)
8. Sleeping On The Roof (Excerpt from the first parking lot experiment OK City, 1996)

The real surprise for us older music fans is the brief excerpt leading into Shine On Sweet Jesus. The Lips do a convincing cover of Every Christian Lion-Hearted Man Will Show You by the Bee Gees. Can you believe it?

The film is about the early and formative years of the band featuring members Wayne Coyne, drummer Steven Drodz and bassist Michael Ivins. The documentary's director Bradley Beesley tracks the shifting philosophy of the band's early years. As he said: "I started in Wayne's neighborhood and really tried to tell the story of how he grew up because he has so many older brothers that were a huge influence on his life."

SXSW is held every year in Austin, Texas. Learn more about the festival here:

The Fearless Freaks documentary will be released on DVD, May 17. Make sure you buy a copy. Meanwhile enjoy this fantastic promo item, only a few hundred were made, and we got ours super quickly by Concorde. The songs are chosen by Kliph Spurlock, their wonderful drummer. The songs as far as we know have never been released before for sale.

WHY WE ARE REMOVING THE FLAMING LIPS

On Friday (April 22, 2005), a person calling himself Mark who says he was from the Recording Industry Pte Ltd (huh?) called BigO saying our free download of Flaming Lips songs is against copyright regulations and we should remove them from the site. We gave "Mark" our email address and asked him to email us the details but there was no email.

On Monday evening (April 25), Pagesetters Pte Ltd, the company that hosts the BigO website, forwarded us a note from Starhub which asked us "to cease and desist from any further alleged unauthorized reproduction and/or distribution of the Materials." Pagesetters had been contacted by Starhub who received a notice from the International Federation of the Phonography Industry (IFPI)/Recording Industry Association (Singapore) (RIAS).

The songs the IFPI and the RIAS objected to were:

The Flaming Lips' Moth In The Incubator, Sleeping On The Roof and When You Smile.

The note from Starhub carried this warning:
"Please note that IFPI has asserted that it's members are entitled to seek legal recourse in connection with the above alleged copyright infringement of the Materials. IFPI has also demanded that you immediately cease and desist from any further alleged unauthorized reproduction and/or distribution of the Materials."

As far as we can ascertain, the tracks Starhub referred to are from Flaming Lips - Film Premiere Bonus Bootleg Giveaway, a CD that was given away during the SXSW premiere of The Fearless Freaks, the new documentary by Bradley Beesley. BigO has been offering this music as free MP3 downloads. We did not earn a single cent.

The tracks on the CD are:

1. Wayne's Intro
2. With You (Molly's, Boston 1986)
3. Can't Stop the Spring (Norman, OK 1988)
4. Shine on Sweet Jesus (Ausburg, Germany 1990 or 91)
5. Space Age Love Song (Chicago, Lollapalooza 1994)
6. Moth in the Incubator (Ventura, CA 1995)
7. When You Smile (Tree's, Dallas 1996)
8. Sleeping on the Roof (Excerpt from the first parking lot experiment OK City, 1996)

Ironically, on Track 1, Wayne's Intro, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips says: "Though the CD is a very limited run of only a few hundred, all who can are urged to copy it and put it on the internet and do whatever you can do with it. Please, please, do not pay hard-earned money for it." (Our emphasis)

With the exception of Wayne's Intro, BigO has decided to remove all the Flaming Lips songs from our site.

When it comes to spreading cheer around, Starhub certainly puts a damper on the notion of "Share The Music, Share The Lifestyle, Share The Passion" - the company's current ad campaign which is aimed at (ha ha) "bringing the world closer together."

Can meh?
