Jill
Sobule
Nashville
2000 [1CD]
Theres more
to Jill Sobule than her one big hit, I Kissed A Girl. Shes not only
funny but with the gift of irony. Her language has clarity but the meaning
is often obscured leaving you with the fun of figuring out just where
you stand in the song. Mexican Wrestler is an unlikely love song about
love as struggle. The imagery is even more startling when you consider
that Sobule is gay. Mary Kay is about forbidden love and the Canadian
teacher who loved and made love to her underage student. On the surface,
the song condemns the teacher but underlying is the sentiment that its
a cruel fate for the two lovers. Dont Kill In Texas is a protest
song against the death penalty that also offers the opposite that its
safer to go beserk and kill somewhere else.
For the uninitiated,
theres plenty of Sobule in this performance at the Belcourt Theatre
in Nashville, Apr 11, 2000, opening for Warren Zevon who also guests on
two tracks. You get a sweep of her repertoire and talent. Its been
some time since a singer-songwriter can stand up naked, with only her
electric guitar, to command your attention. These days they all need the
protection of a band, or at least reliable backing tapes to mime to.
