LAURA
VEIRS
Railway Inn, Winchester,
UK [no label, 1CD]
Sept 21, 2004
Laura Veirs of Seattle
is saddled with the folksinger label yet she is seen to straddle a territory
that stretches between Liz Phair and Patti Smith. Like many singer-songwriters,
which seems a more apt term, Veirs is a poet first. Her debut album for
Nonesuch Records, Carbon Glacier, was released in August 2004. It was
a hit in Europe but remained a cult favourite in the United States. In
September this year, she released her follow-up album (it's actually her
fifth album), Year Of Meteors. This excellent audience recording of Veirs'
show at the Railway Inn in Winchester on Sept 21, 2004, is a fine showcase
for her then-current album, Carbon Glacier. Veirs' songs demand rapt attention
and those present willingly gave it to her. The songs may sound precious
but there is a fraility that is heartwarming and makes you want to listen
to Veirs again and again. A fan who was present at the gig said the songs
"oozed integrity
and understated intelligence. It was a joy to be
there."
