Those who are piqued by the Pink Floyd "reunion" at Live 8 on July 2, 2005 might want to listen to this classic Dark Side Of The Moon set, which has made the rounds among fans under various incarnations, though never as an official release.

In 1974, Pink Floyd did a short winter tour of England and surprised fans with a set of new songs that later appeared on the Wish You Were Here album. The climax of the tour was a three-night stand at Wembley Stadium. On the second night, the BBC was on hand to record the show for live transmission. Over the years, it has never been established whether the Beeb ever recorded the entire show. What was broadcast was the Dark Side Of The Moon segment with an additional track Echoes that later emerged when the radio show was broadcast in the US.

When a pre-FM recording of this show surfaced a few years ago, it contained the opening pre-recorded ramble that preceded Speak To Me. This segment contained a recording of a demented man repeating "I've been mad for fucking years" that the BBC censored. This ramble was also removed when Pink Floyd recorded the Dark Side of the Moon album presumably not to incur the wrath of moral guardians. But it was present on all the three Wembley shows.

So did the BBC record the entire show including the Wish You Were Here segment?

This is what The Swingin' Pig, who was behind this latest version, said: "Despite the fact that a great number of different audio sources exist for this concert, none of them seems to be as good as required. Although the 'PreFM Master' source is, to my knowledge, the best one available, it suffers from various audio flaws like:

- presence of noise (hiss and clicks) and saturation
- wrong speed
- signal drop-out and stereo image losses
- 'parasite' signal on On The Run (end) and Time (beginning), and
- wrong equalisation and dynamics of the audio signal.

The restored version proposed here, mainly based on the 'PreFM Master' source, is an attempt to correct, as far as possible, these different flaws."

During the making of this project, another source containing a very good audio quality of Echoes emerged among the sharing community and has been included here. As The Swingin' Pig further comments: "Although a doubt remains concerning the origin of this source (MP3 sourced?), I chose to preserve this piece because of the historical nature of the performance (sax and female voices)."

At least five thousand fans have already downloaded the July 2, 2005 Pink Floyd reunion at Hyde Park, London and if you want to hear Pink Floyd at their prime, this is probably the best live recording that has emerged so far. Broadcast on the BBC and subsequently on radio stations around the world, it has yet to be officially released. What a shame.
