Peter
Gabriel
Passion
Outtakes [1CD]
In 1989, Peter Gabriel
released Passion, the soundtrack to Martin Scorseses film, The Last
Temptation of Christ, recorded on location in Morocco and other parts
of North Africa and the Middle East.
Like the film, it
was thought provoking for not assimilating its world music influences
into a western pop culture context but actually trying best to fit into
that culture. He released it on a new imprint called Real World Music.
The only concession perhaps was the use of a church choir to embellish
the beautiful With This Love.
Together with Passion,
Peter Gabriel also released another album called Passion Sources featuring
the original music that inspired his score, careful not to invite criticism
that he was stealing the music.
The Passion album
brought much attention of world music figures like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,
Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Maal to the American public and was a forerunner
of world music being used in Hollywood movies. Gabriel was spot on in
understanding the importance of ambiance and meditation in Eastern music
as opposed to the pomp and ceremony of the Western style. It fitted perfectly
into Scorseses moody film about the Christ.
Here is an hour long
collection of sessions made in 1988 and 1989 that never made it to the
soundtrack of The Last Temptation of Christ in excellent quality albeit
with some hiss in the quieter passages.
