SECRET MACHINES
Metro-Smart Bar
Chicago, Illinois
February 4, 2005

The New York Press called them "the city's best live band," while others claim the band paints vivid pictures with sound and volume. Made up of drummer Josh Garza and siblings Brandon Curtis (vocals, keyboards, bass) and Benjamin Curtis (guitar, vocals), you can hear in their music echoes of U2, Spiritualized, Neu, Can, Brian Eno and Pink Floyd (the latter the band considers the "most frequent/annoying comparison"). Before forming in July 2000, the band members played with groups such as Tripping Daisy, Captain Audio, Comet, UFOFU and When Babies Eat Pennies.

They might be called a power trio but they aren't the same as the Minutemen or Husker Du. The group's February 4, 2005 set in Chicago doesn't rock as hard as one expects. Still it is a tight and controlled performance. As one writer says of this gig: "There is something magnetic about a musician hunched over his keyboard singing his heart out amidst the smoky lights. Add a passionate drummer and a first-guitar player with his bangs draped defensively over his face and they've got some sex appeal... And really, who doesn't love slightly depressive smart kids with great rock hair?" As far as we can ascertain, this radio broadcast has not been officially released.
