THE WHITE
STRIPES
'We're Sorry We're
From Amerika' [no label 1CD]
Glastonbury Festival, Pilton, UK, June 24, 2005
Its almost all Jack White from here. He sings like Robert Plant
before the smokes choked his throat. This is almost an Aunties band -
you know the kind of music your aunty and uncle used to headbang to in
the bad old days of heavy metal lite. Listening to the songs, it's hard
to imagine there are only two performers on stage.
Whites not
shy to show off his range, not as high as Plants, but enough and
powerful. His songwriting owes a lot to melodic rock not indie or grunge.
This year, Whites been avoiding the spotlight and making moves in
far away South America, getting married and generally allowing his music
to come across harder. Its the right thing to do. Avoid the labels
and easy traps of routine.
His covers tell a
different story. Hes a romantic. Jolene and that Dusty cover are
just the tip of his record collection. Dont forget his country music.
From this Glastonbury
show, Jacks alright. But what about Meg?
