Dark Tranquillity
Gates Of
Metal 2005 [No Label 1CD]
Live in Hultsfred, Sweden, August 6, 2005. An FM recording.
At the metal festival,
Gates of Metal, in Hultsfred, Sweden, Dark Tranquillity played a set that
drew on material from their last two albums Character [2005] and Damage
Done [2002]. Those two albums offered fresh direction for the band introducing
electronic soundscapes and fuller compositions of very dramatic and epic
songs while retaining their melodeath style with hummable tunes.
If the term "melodic death metal" sounds like a contradiction in terms,
then that's what Sweden's Dark Tranquillity sound like. Take the band's
opening track at the Hultsfred Festival in 2005 for example. The Treason
Wall sounds like any other death metal track, buzzing guitar and growling
vocals. But in the background, there is a majestic sweep that better recalls
Asia or even Yes. Seen as one of the leading Swedish metal bands, Dark
Tranquillity have the speed, they have the chops and there is a nice balance
between ferocity and melody. Then there are tracks such as The New Build,
The Wonders At Your Feet and Punish My Heaven, which have a certain catchiness
(not to mention a certain Twilight Zone-ishness) to them. On the downside,
Lost To Apathy and Through Smudged Lenses breeze through without registering.
But Dark Tranquillity are the maturing sound of the early Scandinavian
black metal scene that once panicked adults from Norway to Malaysia with
its aggression and satanic stance. These days the metal bands there prefer
to put on a show. Typical is Dark Tranquillity's studied compositions,
layered sound and competent musicianship. The band look more like middle-age
salarymen than heavy metallers.
At once enjoyable and entertaining, you'd wished they'd be a bit more
menacing. But they do put up a good show. - Stephen Tan
Character is their
7th album. First album was recorded in 1991, Trail Of Life
Decayed.
