Green Zone
Live at Pit Inn [No Label 2CD]
Live at Pit Inn, Shinjuku, Tokyo, March 1, 2006.
Since his career
began in the 90s, Japanese experimentalist Otomo Yoshihide has been
constantly challenging himself. He formed the influential group Ground
Zero in 1990, until its final concert in 1997. He writes pop music for
films and even TV series such as the popular Lupin III anime. He's been
involved in minimal wave-based electronics, as heard in his Filament and
I.S.O projects which were formed in 1998. He also plays jazz covering
works by Ornette Coleman, Gerry Mulligan and Eric Dolphy, as well as his
own original compositions.
As Otomo said: "looking
back on the things I've always been involved in when I first started doing
music, in the 90s and now, it comes down to the issue of musical
language and idioms. My shift in '98 began when I came to feel what might
be called a physical revulsion towards the act of making music in my established
style. What I was trying to create then was neither the next new musical
language nor an idiom-free performance style. I thought it might be possible
to do something where sound remained in the state just before becoming
the language called music - a phenomenon hanging in mid air. This continues
to be a theme in my work."
The latest album
by Otomo is Episome on the Tzadik label released last month. Titled Episome,
it features Otomo with bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Yoshida Tatsuya.
