At the 2006 Brit
Awards held on February 15, James Blunt walked away with awards for Best
Pop Act and Best British Male artist. Accepting the award, he quipped:
"I've been accused of singing like a girl so many times, I'm very surprised
I've been nominated for, and won a male award" as a bit of a bite back
at his critics.
It was Blunt's third
single, "You're Beautiful", that became the singer's breakout hit. The
song debuted at #12 in the UK, before rising to the #1 position six weeks
later. The song also received massive airplay in the UK which was able
to propel Back To Bedlam to #1 on the albums chart, unseating the record-breaking
album X&Y by Coldplay from the pole position. After the success of
"You're Beautiful" in the UK, the song crossed over to mainland Europe,
becoming one the biggest hits of summer 2005 across the continent.
The show at the Mermaid
Theatre on Jan 31, 2006, broadcast on BBC Radio 2, though short, features
a spirited performance by Blunt. As far as we can ascertain, these live
tracks have never been officially released.
