ROIO of the Week
[Recordings of Indeterminate Origin]

For the month of January, we honor the late Derek Bailey’s works with music as alien to you as it was intimate to him. Not a bit of wall paper.

Lou Reed and Zeitkratzer
Metal Machine Music Live!

When it came out in 1975, Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music confounded friends and foes alike as it came after his successful and commercial Sally Can’t Dance album. Metal Machine Music was all but noise - feedback squalls, amplifier hums and the chirping of electronic gadgets. The consensus was that this was not music but a protest by Reed to his record label of the time, RCA.

Time has been kinder to this recording and today it has become part of the avant garde and highly regarded for participating in the "free music" of popular culture. Now some fans have given Reed’s album a thorough listen and transcribed a music score from the sounds of Metal Machine Music for a jazz ensemble to play.

This live recording of Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music was performed by the 11-member Zeitkratzer ensemble together with Lou Reed on guitar and Mike Rathke [sound design]. The venue was the Malibran Theatre in Venice on March 20, 2002. This is a radio broadcast never made available on CD.
