John Zorn's Masada
Live In Taiwan 1996 [no label, 2CD]
Live at the Crown Theater, Taipei, Taiwan, May 24, 1996.

Most performing artists do not really care for fan or audience recordings of their shows. But here is a series of audience-recorded shows that was important enough for avant-garde musician John Zorn to release a compilation of the tracks on a double CD.

John Zorn's Masada played four nights in a row at the tiny Crown Theater from Wednesday to Saturday, May 22-25, 1996. The reception exceeded the band's wildest dreams and they responded with everything they had, resulting in some of the finest and most exciting Masada shows ever performed. According to the person who taped the show, after the last encore of the final night, trumpeter Dave Douglas was literally lying on the floor of the dressing room with a big red imprint from his mouthpiece etched on his lips, looking like an athlete that had been physically exhausted but held on through mental fortitude and adrenaline until he crossed the finish line.

This venue, a dance studio shaped in the form of a long rectangle, presented certain acoustic challenges. The band lined up four in a row against the far wall, facing an audience only about five rows deep but seated wide across the long part of the rectangle. The wooden floors and the short depth of the sound stage created considerable reflection of the horns, while the drums and bass rebounded and trailed into the corners. The taper said: "I admit the sound quality isn't professional, but it's still damn good and certainly clear and balanced enough to allow the magic that took place in that odd little dance studio to shine through and touch the listener with the drive, energy, rapport, and even restraint that Masada exhibits at its very best."

The taper continued: "I mention this because I recorded all four nights with a Sony D8 DAT tape machine and binaural microphones clipped onto the ear pieces of my glasses. I traded the tapes with other bootleg collectors and the tapes were passed on to John Zorn, who had the wisdom to release them on his Tzadik label. Like many others, I'm a Masada nut, and those four nights in Taipei were by far the most sublime musical experiences of my life. The audience was charged, the band picked up on the vibe and carried it further, and the results were sublime and often cathartic."
