New
Order
Wellington,
New Zealand [no label, 1CD]
Live
at Victoria University, December 8, 1982.
When Ian Curtis died
in 1980, so ended his group, Joy Division. But the remaining members decided
to continue as New Order. If Joy Divison was a rock band, then New Order
was an electro (or synth-pop as the term was later coined) band. After
three singles - Ceremony, Procession and Everything's Gone Green - the
group was ready with its debut album, Movement (November 1981), of which
Uncut magazine says: "The difficult first album. You could almost smell
the fear." Perhaps Bernard Sumner was rather candid when he says: "It
was kind of nervous writing, really. I hate those songs. We recorded them,
I played the album once, and I don't think I ever played it again. In
fact, I don't own a copy."
But whatever reservations
the band had, that never stopped them from writing more songs and going
into the studio. By March 1983 the group had already released their second
album, Power, Corruption & Lies. By then, the group had tasted some
success with Temptation (released as a single in April 1982) and their
reputation as a "dance" group would be enhanced with the release of Blue
Monday.
If fans were looking
forward to a set of familiar tunes when New Order played in Wellington,
New Zealand on December 8, 1982, they must have been disappointed. Apart
from Temptation and its B-side, Hurt, five songs from the forthcoming
Power, Corruption & Lies were previewed. Perhaps that might account
for the heckling the group received.
According to the
notes that came with this CD, Bernard is unusually quiet during the show
but returns to form just before Blue Monday. Something along the lines
of (in response to hecklers): "I can't f**cking hear a word you're saying
so if you don't like it you'll just have to f**ck off... I could be in
bed at this very moment." Then, he said: "Do you like drums? I hope you
like drums because it goes on like this for another half an hour, and
there's another one just the same after it." (The latter is with reference
to Blue Monday and 5-8-6).
The notes continued:
"The mix on this is bizarre to say the least. Your Silent Face seems to
vary in tempo and then it seems like the engineer is experimenting with
the levels (particularly the drums) which vary from instrument to instrument
throughout the song and continuing into Temptation. Less so on Dreams
Never End but the lead guitar is well to the fore on this one. As the
recording quality is so good it's more interesting than annoying. This
version does not have the false start to Your Silent Face and, like the
other soundboard version has a portion of 5-8-6 missing from when the
engineer inadvertantly hit pause."
While this is taken
from the soundboard, the mix isn't balanced - the vocals are way back.
Nonetheless, this "raw" recording shows a band gamely, on the one hand,
entertaining their fans with "oldies" while on the other, trying to introduce
and familiarise the audience with what is to come.
