Nikki Sudden R.I.P.: July 19, 1956 - March 26, 2006

Former Swell Maps and Jacobites singer Nikki Sudden has passed away in New York city from a suspected drug overdose. He was 49. We’ve always enjoyed his music when he and his late brother, Epic Soundtracks, were part of Swell Maps and Jacobites. Here’s a recording of a special show by Sudden from February.

Nikki Sudden
In Berlin 2006 [no label 1CD]
Live at GER - Artliners in Berlin, Germany, Feb 17, 2006.

Nikki Sudden had just seen his career take a lift when Secretly Canadian signed him for an album. The still unreleased The Truth Doesn’t Matter will now be Sudden’s epitaph. Nikki Sudden died on Sunday night, Mar 26 after a show at the Knitting Factory in New York.

Sudden and his late brother Epic Soundtracks formed Swell Maps in the late ‘70s and were prominent on the Rough Trade label despite releasing only two albums. Sudden was a huge Rolling Stones fan and believed in rock ‘n’ roll.

In the same spirit, we offer this audience recording [DAT] made just last month in Berlin. Those who want to find out more of Sudden can buy his albums, all recently reissued on Secretly Canadian and wait for the indie label to release his final work, The Truth Doesn’t Matter.
