Patti
Smith
San Diego
1978 [no label/2CD]
Live at
the California Theater, San Diego, CA; May 15, 1978.
It's been more than
two years since Patti Smith's breakthrough album, Horses, and the May
15, 1978 gig was also a historical event - it was poet Jim Carroll's first
performance as a rock star.
In January 1977,
Smith had fallen from the stage and broke her neck. Having recovered,
she was on the rock circuit again.
This is what Robert
P Laurence wrote in the San Diego Union (May 16, 1978) of the concert:
"Backstage, onstage and in front of the stage, chaos reigned most of the
night, delaying the start of the concert for an hour and a half and contributing
to an atmosphere of near-violence that Smith herself seemed to encourage,
then wave away. As a performer, she seemed unable to make up her mind
whether to be a poet, a rock 'n' roller, commedian or demagogue. Once
she did get down to playing rock music, the advertised attraction of the
evening, she handled the task with rare effectiveness and intensity."
Laurence added: "When
all the monkey business was over, and Smith concentrated on her business,
she put on a stirring show."
We've also included
a link below to her performance at Wiggins Park in Camden, New Jersey,
last July 24 where three songs are offered for download: Babelogue, Rock
And Roll Nigger and Gloria. Sample these and compare them to the same
songs performed in this early 1978 show.
Smith, among her
peers, seems to be one of the few that have strengthened her performance
and songwriting with age. While others parody themselves, Smith adds more
fire, more color, more meaning to her older songs. Her voice has beautifully
flowered. Not innocent nor naive but fiercely determined. Her songs have
improved, flavored with melodies, tinted with a poet's rhythm and come
across sincere. She is unflinchingly hopeful for a better world. You can't
see a trace of cynicism.
Patti Smith has never
been a best-selling artist. She remains an icon. In 1975, her album Horses
divided the past and the present. As Jim Morrison of the Doors was fond
to shout "Rock is dead", a still unreleased 30-min bluesrock workout,
Smith instead saw the need to reinvigorate what it meant to be young and
full of hopes and dreams. Horses celebrated its 30th anniversary last
year and remains one of the more influential albums to have arrived.
There hasn't been
anything new since. And there's also been no need.
