Around the same time
Beatle fans were cheered by the release of "new" Beatles outtakes, the
military junta in Burma moved in on the monks peaceful march in Rangoon.
How many were killed, we don't know. Amazingly the music struck an unusual
chord with the reports coming from Burma.
The all-instrumental
She's Leaving Home [Tk 10] suddenly seemed to fit the plight of Nobel
Peace Prize winner Aung Sun Suu Kyi, isolated and imprisoned for a decade
in her prison home then transported to Insien [pronounced "insane"] Prison
for a longer stay. The instruments all unite to offer a sad theme for
a journey that is yet to complete.

I read the news
today oh boy
Four
thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And
though the holes were rather small
They
had to count them all
Suddenly "4,000 holes
in Blackpool" could have meant "4,000 monks in Rangoon" arrested, beaten
and jailed somewhere up north. The song's always apocalyptic introduction
"I read the news today... oh boy..." will always be how you felt after
reading something tragic. "The news today was rather sad." A timeless
song that will always mean something anywhere in time.
With A Little Help
From My Friends [Tks 15-16] is the hypocrisy of the world when addressing
Burma. Who has not been giving a little to get something from that resource-rich
nation? "I'll get by with a little help from my friends". World pressure
is not working because Burma has friends among international corporations
and greedy neighbours. And Ringo reminds us "I get high with a little
help from my friends". Burma is a major producer of illicit drugs funnelled
through its friendly neighbours.
Another highlight
is the isolated vocal take of Paul McCartney screaming the words to Sgt
Peppers [Tks 12-13]. It's heavy metal, suddenly aggrieved and angry not
at all "luvverly". "It was twenty years ago today," Paul sings. You are
reminded the junta has been in power since 1988, just shy of 20 years.
"Sgt Pepper taught the band to play. They've been going in and out of
style. But they're guaranteed to raise a smile... We hope you will enjoy
the show..."

Oct 3: "An eerie quiet prevailed in Rangoon, Burma's biggest city, where
the junta has continued its scare tactics. Military vehicles patrolled
the streets overnight blaring warnings from loudspeakers that soldiers
were searching for protesters, saying: "We have photographs. We are going
to make arrests!""
Suddenly the sound
of a marching band mixed with Paul's vocal track is like an introduction
for the terror that awaits the unfortunate. Watch the news with this as
soundtrack. "We hope you will enjoy the show" takes a completely horrifying
meaning.
Who will love these
lonely hearts in the generals' band of brothers?
It has been argued
that a man who loves his country so much is also prepared to do great
harm to those who oppose him. Remember Tiananman? Perhaps the generals
and the dictators just love themselves.
So the
bigger the love is mirrored by the greater the hate. Conquer the liar
with Truth.
