Here's a quick up
of a Brian Wilson show from 10 or so days ago where he premieres new and
interesting music. That Lucky Old Sun could well have been spelt "son".
Brian's had a rough
life. A mean old man, a band that didn't understand him [they spiked Smile]
and a record label that wanted a supply of endless summers.
The suite's songs
are linked by Van Dyke Park's narratives which tell of Brian's and surf
music's story. The music is big time nostalgic for days gone by. We can
imagine how this might work in the studio with a full orchestra and those
endless harmonies. But for the moment, you'll have to accept the shortcomings
of a live performance.
The Beach Boys sure
paid a big price for playing their joyful pop. The story of the band's
internal battles and lawsuits read like tabloid headlines and the life
story's a soap opera. That Lucky Old Sun brings all to a closure and has
a healing effect. Midnight's Another Day will always be seen as confessional:
"All these voices,
all these memories
made
me feel like stone
All
these people made me feel so alone
Lost
in the dark, no shades of gray
until
I found midnight's another day"
Brian's dark years
seem to have finally lifted. Good for him.
He closes the show
with The Beatles' She's Leaving Home from the album that he tried so hard
to beat, Sgt Pepper's. If one were to speculate on his choice, it could
be read that of all the Beatles songs, this one by his old friend Paul
McCartney touched Wilson deepest. Brian mentions at the show that Paul
had played the song to him back in '67.
Was it the kindred
spirit he saw in the lonely girl, who spends so much time in an empty
house that was never a home and finally finds the courage to leave? In
a twist, Brian plays this as an upbeat pop song unlike the melodrama that
is the Beatles' version. As if to say, that the girl in the song was not
ungrateful but misunderstood.

Fun was the one thing
that Brian Wilson never really got in his sandbox of a life.
This superb audience
recording was torrented by 'delvillain' at Demonoid in four parts as wav
files. No known recording lineage. Many thanks to him.
