Little Bit More To Dio
Ronnie James Dio [born Ronald Padavona] wasn't always this big-time
heavy metaller. Before there was Black Sabbath, there was Rainbow.
Before Rainbow, Dio was in a band called Elf, would you believe? Nowadays,
Ronnie James Dio walks across the stage as part of the heavy quartet
Heaven & Hell. Back then, he was also covering, mind you, covering
Black Sabbath. |

Ronnie James Dio
was born July 10, 1942. He is 65.
There are no plans
for an early retirement. In fact judging from his performances at the
recent Heaven & Hell tour with his Black Sabbath bandmates, Dio [the
Italian word for GOD] is still one powerhouse of a singer. But before
he made the big time, he was a member of local Cortland band, Elf. Here
we offer a rare look at Dio's early years.
Like all the bands
from this period, doing covers was mandatory. What was not was Dio's variety
of covers from Rod Stewart, The Faces, Humble Pie to Graham Nash, of all
things. He has the ability to make them his own. Even on Nash's Simple
Man, there is an affecting quality. Right after which Elf blows it all
away with a kick-out-the-jams ******f**kers cover of The Who.
It is moot whether
Elf on their own steam would have eventually made it. Dio thought it better
to ride along on Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and the rest as they say
is history. Note in particular, Elf's final track, a note for note cover
of Black Sabbath's War Pigs. Dio later fronted that band when Ozzy took
a break.
Dio has avoided the
pitfalls of many metal bands and has managed to carefully climb to the
upper levels of rock royalty. At the very least, Dio will be remembered
as the singer who made the infamous "devil's horns" hand sign a popular
gesture at metal concerts.

* with the exception
of the guitarist, the rest of the band played on Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow,
the first Rainbow album. By the time Rising was recorded, Blackmore removed
them all except for Ronnie. Blackmore got acquainted with Elf when they
opened for Deep Purple on the US leg of the Machine Head tour all those
years ago.
On Elf's debut album Ronnie James Dio is listed as Ronald Padavona but it's
really the Dio you love. They play boogie rock not metal. Dio's voice is
