Be Dazed And Confused [Empress Valley, 4CD set]

at Earl's Court Arena, London, UK, May 24, 1975.
These were the best
of times. Led Zeppelin had conquered America. Now they wanted to come
home to say goodbye. English tax laws were too demanding and exile was
the sane thing to do. But just before they left, the band decided to play
a series of gigs at the 17,000 capacity venue, Earl's Court Arena in London.
Three days were picked
on May 17, 18 and 23. But within hours of the tickets going on sale, they
were sold out. So two more dates were added. Tickets sold at around £2.50
each. Those were indeed the days. The final two shows were also recorded.
The soundboard recording of the final date, May 25, finally appeared among
collectors in early 2002 and made their way to Japan where bootlegs were
minted and sold. However, six songs from the May 25 show finally appeared
when Zeppelin released a self-titled live DVD compilation in 2003.
But the date on May
24 is the favourite, as high quality tapes have been around since the
'90s when CD bootlegs first arrived. Great Dane, the famous bootleg label,
released it as Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp using the video source. For the longest
time, the entire show did not appear. It wasn't until 2002 that an almost
complete version of this show appeared in bootleg circles using the soundboard
source.
He Must Be Dazed
And Confused arrived almost immediately after another bootleg by Watchtower
of the same show, To Be A Rock And Not To Roll, was released with digital
clicks marring an otherwise fantastic release. This Empress Valley release
corrected those faults while offering the same high sonic quality.
The Earl's Court
shows were a special event for Led Zeppelin who also declared themselves
serious artists with the release of the Physical Graffiti double album.
It was their epic album with allusions to jazz explorations and a ear
for world rhythms.
On each night at
Earl's Court a different radio presenter was invited to open the show.
On May 17, it was Bob Harris], 18 [Johnnie Walker], 23 [David 'Kid' Jansen],
24 [Nicky Horne] and on 25, the final night, Alan Freeman.
Highlights of the
show included In My Time Of Dying within the first set, a fantastic display
of controlled emotions from Robert Plant. No Quarter had a superb piano-guitar
duel between John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page. Also essential live performances
of Tangerine, Trampled Underfoot, a long involving Dazed And Confused
with Woodstock worked into the song and some say the best live version
of Stairway To Heaven.
The best audience
recording to emerge from the Earl's Court gigs has been for the show on
May 23. This recording was made close
to the stage and the detail is exceptional. Look for Empress Valley's
Demand Unprecedented In The History Of Rock Music EVSD 101-104 or Jelly
Roll's Physical Express.
