Neil
Young & Crazy Horse
Nagoya 1976
[no label 2CD]
Live
at Aichikan Taiikukan, Nagoya, March 3, 1976.
At the close of 1973,
Neil Young regrouped with Crosby, Stills And Nash for one of the first
supergroup reunions that truth be told was more shambolic than superb.
After which he spent 1975 sorting out his personal affairs, recording
and releasing two albums, the already-recorded Tonight's The Night from
1974 and the fresh, new Zuma, recorded in December 1974 and in March 1975.
Zuma's perspective
was positive next to the gloom of albums like Journey Through The Past,
Time Fades Away, On The Beach and the dark Tonight's The Night. For a
start, the entire cover was white with simple black etchings. Back to
the drawing board, a return to the beginning? It wasn't like the youthful
glow of Harvest, instead more reflective and contemplative, even hopeful
of the future.
Some have attributed
the change in outlook to Young losing his wife and child, he had split
from Carrie Snodgrass who left with son Zeke, and his move to a beachfront
property on Zuma Beach. The burden of a relationship gone, Young was renewed.
Also his hero Bob Dylan was successfully recreating his career in the
'70s with a major tour with the Band in 1974 and by early 1975, had his
marriage on the rocks, and a critically-acclaimed album Blood On The Tracks.
The reinvention of Dylan to rock star did not go unnoticed.
But a throat operation
in October 1975 cancelled plans to tour, pushing it to March 1976. Young's
management decided he should step out first in the new and expanding Japan
market, then double back to Europe for the rest of the tour.
The enthusiasm of
Japanese fans caught Young by surprise. They dressed like him, down to
patched jeans. He thought it "nothing less than staggering" to be imitated
like that. The Japan shows are among his best - again he opened with an
acoustic set and closed with Crazy Horse in the second half. This time
new songs from Zuma were added to old faithfuls from After The Goldrush
and Harvest. There was also a quartet of new songs, unrecorded at the
time - Too Far Gone, No One Seems To Know, Country Home and Lotta Love.
It seems all involved
are unanimous that this was one of their best tours. Bassist Billy Talbot
said, "Neil was just sparkling. We had a band again. I heard us playing
like I knew nobody else could play."
This period has been
dubbed "The Year of the Horse" and established Young as a survivor and
one of the new superstars to emerge in the '70s. Surprisingly, he achieved
this not by pandering to his audience but rather by defiantly remaining
independent and unpredictable, releasing critical but unpopular albums
and working hard touring frequently and releasing, by today's standards,
many albums.
Although some shows
were properly recorded, no complete show has emerged. All that circulates
among collectors are audience recordings but they are very good, recorded
close to the stage with clear separation among instruments and vocals.

For this period,
Neil Young was promoting his new album Zuma [released in November 1975]
although he'd also released Tonight's The Night earlier in June. But some
of the harrowing tracks on that album had been premiered on the Time Fades
Away tour in 1973.
