One can only hope
that Stevie Wonder will one day release an album by his backing group,
the Wonderlove (which included at various times Minnie Riperton, Deniece
Williams, Lynda Laurence and Syreeta Wright). After all, they were one
of the highlights of Signed, Sealed And Delivered. And as a fan commented
on the version at this show: "The jam on Signed, Sealed And Delivered
is just nuts. If your ass isn't shaking by the end of it, better have
someone check your pulse." The other highlight is the Wonderlove on Killing
Me Softly. And while Stevie Wonder doesn't even try to out-do Billy Paul
on Me And Mrs Jones, what is undeniable is the overall funky good vibe.
Wonder had a good
year in 1973 - scoring three hits in the charts - Superstition, You Are
The Sunshine Of My Life and Higher Ground. And that's a good 10 years
or so before he conquered the world with I Just Called To Say I Love You.

"There are a half-dozen small discontinuities in the recording, including
abrupt transitions between songs and small gaps, some with brief silences
and others without. There was a tape flip in Killing Me Softly at about
4:15."

"This is my work.
"The story behind
the recording is that, during the summer of 1988, some friends of David
Graham were hired to go through the BGP vault and figure out what was
in it, so the material could be digitized. Sonic Solutions was hired to
repair the deteriorating reels and they turned them into DAT or PCM tapes
of some sort (I don't know those details, and it may have varied from
tape to tape).
"Those friends then
made cassette copies of some of these DAT/PCMs for themselves. The night
that they were going to leave San Francisco, the suitcase of master cassettes
were stolen out of their van parked at a Little Feat concert in Berkeley,
I think it was. No one knows what happened to those master cassettes.
Probably, they were sold by some homeless guy on the streets of Berkeley
and tossed in the trash by someone's wife a decade later.
"Fortunately, a few
copies of the master cassette were made. I was given three of them to
digitize, which I did. On this one, there is an 'extra' cassette flip
in Killing Me Softly, generated by the dope who made the cassette copy
badly. The remaining dropouts and glitches are, probably, problems with
the original mastering from reel to DAT/PCM.
"I was going to seed
this and two other transfers, but part of the goal of this project was
to see if any of the other dozen or so master cassettes and copies of
those master cassettes, might shake loose, without pissing off David Graham
or anyone else. I know where a few are, but their owner won't part with
them.
"Obviously, there's
more to this story than I've told, but I don't have permission to tell
it.
As for best available
source, I believe that barring the digital source created by Sonic Solutions,
and unless the master cassette surfaces someday, this is the best available
recording of this show that you can find."
