Amy
Winehouse
Absolutely
Live [no label, 1CD]
Live
at Tempodrom, Berlin, Germany, Oct 15, 2007. Broadcast Jan 22, 2008.
The
current buzz around singer Amy Winehouse seems to be more about her lifestyle
than music. With only two albums, Winehouse has already become a media
celebrity, way in front of her album sales or awareness of her music.
More
people know about her "beehive" hairdo, her Spock-like eye-shadow, her
four-inch pumps, her push-up bra, her loafer of a husband with an incredible
name "Blake Fielder-Civil" and now the latest. The star who sang Rehab
"They
tried to make me go to rehab I won't go go go, I'd rather be at home with
Ray" (Charles, that is).
is
currently in rehab. But what a way to go. Apparently, this is why she
decided to go:
"Amy's
boss, Lucian Grange at Universal Music Group (UMG), reportedly used 'shock'
tactics to prove to the troubled star she has a serious drugs problem.
Grange presented the 24-year-old soul diva with a huge collection of newspaper
cuttings from around the world documenting her downfall.
"A
source at UMG said: 'Lucian got his international marketing manager to
find and copy every piece of press from around the world. It took the
guy two days. Lucian then laid everything out in his huge office and summoned
Amy. He told her to have a good look, then tell him she hasn't got a problem
with drugs'."
Did
she listen to her parents? No. Her friends? No. It took a threat from
the "boss" to make her see cents [sic].
Musically,
Winehouse has done a sidestep from the slightly jazz first album to the
full-throttle rhythm & blues of Back To Black. Her live band is great,
equipped to swing either way. When she isn't out of it, her voice is powerful.
She can belt it loud like Aretha. Winehouse is also the writer of her
songs. She recognises other people's songs that suit her. Her cover of
The Zutons' Valerie is one such. So is the Specials' You're Wondering
Now. Both are mighty fine covers although they aren't enough to blow away
the originals.
Her
last tour of Europe resulted in many cancelled shows. The girl was out
of it much of the time. Fans say the shows from the first half, January
to July, were better. But much of rock's legend also lies in how her heroes
struggle to stand up. So here's a Berlin show, the first after many cancellations.
Clearly she's bothered. Her singing here is plenty slurred. Uncomfortable
listening but there's plenty of grit there as well.
The
show opens after long delays [thankfully we are spared sitting through
that on this recording] and she loons around with Addicted. By the time
she's in charge, it's on Rehab. Art like life. Let's hope so.
It
will take more than a pop star's dalliance with drink, drugs and sex to
be great. Just ask Courtney Love. An excellent FM recording. Thanks to
Vortex242 for sharing this at the Traders' Den. No official release as
far as we know.
