Brotherhood Consort
Paris 2008 [no label, 1CD]
Live at Cite de la Musique,
Paris, France, February 9, 2008.
Last year, French avant-garde
saxophonist, Raphael Imbert, put out the challenging
Bach/Coltrane album. Together with classical organist (and teacher of baroque
improvisation), Andres Rossi, the album sets out to make connections between
Bach's church choral influences with that of Coltrane's negro spirituals. You can hear that fusion live here on Song of Praise/Jesu Meine Freude (Coltrane/Bach) proving that both men were spiritual brothers-
in-improvisation.
Here in their Brotherhood Consort
project, they are joined by double bassists, Michel Peres and Simon Tailleu, who have a long duet on Coltrane's Selflessness
(one of his later compositions in 1965) and violinist, Marie Bereau, heard on the beautiful cover of Duke Ellington's
Come Sunday. But the stand-out track is Albert Ayler's Truth Is Marching In, where Imbert wisely realises that no one can match Ayler's crying, screaming tone. Instead he opts for a
calmly passionate, gospel rendition bringing out the sacred aspects of Ayler's composition. Jean-Luc Difraya and Mourad Benhammou work
busily in the background on drums and percussion, making sure that the march of
truth never falters. - Philip Cheah
