An
occasional look at upcoming artists. This week, 27-year-old female singer-songwriter
Dawn Landes of Louisville, Kentucky, USA.
From this recent
radio show you can get a pretty decent idea of Dawn Landes' range and
styles.
She can write jingles.
Straight Lines has been used to publicise London's transport system as
well as a teen's deoderant, Axe, in the U.S. Catchy song.
She writes in simple
French. Le Tourbillon shows her love for chanson. She sings with the freshness
of a Yeh Yeh girl. At a recent gig in London, Landes covered Francoise
Hardy's 'Tous Les Garconnes Et Les Filles' [Find Me A Boy]. "I wrote a
few songs in France and my French is so basic I can only write like a
child. It's crippling but strangely liberating too," she said in an interview
with Timesonline, Apr 5, 2008.
Landes belongs to
a new crop of singer-songwriters who may not have heard the Velvet Underground's
I'm Sticking With You [the demo-like version on the box Peel Slowly and
See] but take their cue from that song to write and sing in a child-like
fashion. Twilight and Tired Of This Life would make Lou Reed proud.
Otherwise, reviewers
and critics have coined the Americana tag and young folk-singer label
to describe Dawn Landes. Landes is from Louisville, Kentucky the same
place as Will Oldham, David Pajo, My Morning Jacket and Sebadoh. She moved
to New York to further her education but dropped out to work in a music
studio. She places on her C.V., recording engineer, and has worked for
Ryan Adams, Philip Glass, HEM and others. She has opened her own recording
studio in New York.
Recently she wrote
about the music that influenced her for The UK Guardian. "This song [Nilsson's
Lifeline] is possibly the dreamiest song in the world. I saw The Point!
on TV when I was really young and never learned it was Nilsson, whose
compositions I love, until I was contacted about doing a cover version
for a compilation last year. Every single song he makes is a new universe.
The arrangements are magical. I love the way he's so uninhibited with
the vocals; imagine adults doing cartoon voices." This about describes
her own infatuation with child-like songs.
Landes has been on
a promo drive in Europe where she has been noticed as a rising star.
Tired Of This Life
is the first single from her new album, Fireproof, and can be heard on
