ROIO of the Week [Recordings
of Indeterminate Origin]
Prog
Rock V
David
Sylvian has come full circle from glam rock to avant garde, prog rock
and finally to just music with a capital "M". What lies ahead is a mystery
worthy of unravelling.

David Sylvian
The World Is Everything In Hong Kong [no label, 2CD]
Liive
at HiTec Hall B, Hong Kong, Oct 27, 2007. An excellent audience stereo
recording.
"This
tour is in part a means of putting earlier chapters of my working life
behind me... of embracing the work that was done and, with a sense of
finality, cutting the ties that bind me to it as a body, an entity."
- David Sylvian.
David
Sylvian, formerly of Japan, is not a poor man's David Bowie. Both share
a similar musical journey from the glam of Japan to art rock, experimental,
ambient and finally to a mature adult-oriented rock music. While Bowie
has entertained massive audiences, Sylvian has dug deeper finding less
popular but unique avenues for his music. To Sylvian goes the honor of
the "black tie, white noise" label.
The
World Is Everything 2007-2008 Tour is the Nine Horses band Sylvian formed
in late 2005 and showcases his vocal works with an emphasis on his singing,
including jazz vocals. You won't find his experimental/avant garde works
here. The only Japan track resurrected is Ghosts.
Sylvian
has a long association with Asia. His first longterm relationship was
with Japanese photographer, artist and designer Yuka Fujii who apparently
turned him on to the non-pop side of music. Sylvian has since recorded
with Ryuichi Sakamoto ["Bamboo Houses/Bamboo Music" and "Merry Christmas
Mr Lawrence"]. In 2007, Sylvian issued "When Loud Weather Buffeted Naoshima",
a single-track album which was commissioned by the Fukutake Art Museum
Foundation for the 2006 Standard Festival held on the island of Naoshima.
Outside
of Japan, this show in Hong Kong was his only stop in Asia. You can hear
excited Hongkongers chatting in Cantonese just before the encore. Fans
from all over Asia, flew to Hong Kong to catch this rare performance.
This
show was shared on the net by taper Fat, Freccia and "nice detective".
This has been remastered by RDWM. Recorded live using an I-river H-120
with Rockbox firmware at 44.1Khz 16bit. By all accounts, security was
everywhere so it is amazing such a high quality audience recording was
made. Please support the artist and visit his site to buy albums and merchandise

David Sylvian is anything but tardy. One of the best places to start are
the many compilations of his work. Everything & Nothing was released
in 2000 and collects his solo works till then. Buy
