ROIO of the Week [Recordings
of Indeterminate Origin]
Inside
September
Sinatra was 49
in 1964 when he attempted to get some perspective on his career as a romantic
singer. The ageing American Empire is currently 63 years old since the
end of World War Two. Time for reflection. This is part II of our No Country
For Old Men theme of downloads.

Sinatra
Inside September
[no label, 2CD]
Regarded as his finest
post-Capitol album, September Of My Years was a look back at his youth
that is contemplative, reflective, nostalgic and with a touch of regret.
Sinatra's voice had matured into a deeper, richer and warmer baritone.
Sinatra sang about middle age, the effect on appearance, the golden memories
of time passed. About wives, lovers and friends. He also was not ignorant
that rock 'n' roll was waiting to bloom.
Inside September
is a 2CD set collecting alternate takes and the session recordings of
the songs. Sinatra fans have long wanted to hear the various sessions
of this legendary singer but to date despite various reissues and box
sets, almost all the sessions, outtakes and alternates remain unissued.
As you can hear from
these sessions for September Of My Years, there is much to enjoy from
listening to Sinatra attempt the songs. His comments about tempo and the
occasional flub when he sings the wrong words are humorous. Always, Sinatra's
voice is in impeccable form.
Most reviewers conclude
the album was as much autobiographical as it was arranger Gordon Jenkins'
astute song selection. It Was A Very Good Year is one of the album's highlights
with the memorable opening verse "When I was seventeen, it was a very
good year..."
We cannot imagine
over the last 10 years, any 17-year-old sharing that sentiment. Not in
Darfur, not in Iraq and not in Kosovo. Maybe not even in America. As the
song advances, Sinatra remembers all the "good years", when he was 24,
35... like a catalog of the Golden Age of Empire.
The album is also
a snapshot of the lives and loves of people living in a first world country
during the '50s. It is a romantic world of courtship, young lovers and
days of wine and roses. This was the pop culture that entered world consciousness
after the Second World War. Everybody wanted to enjoy the American dream
like Sinatra, "when we were young". Nevermind that it was an illusion
that could not last. By the time of the late '60s when the full impact
of America in Vietnam was felt, youngsters decided to reject the old world
and create their own culture and politics. Rock 'n' roll surged after
1965.
When Sinatra wanted
to make September Of My Years, he timed it to be released when he turned
50. CBS brought cameras to capture Sinatra recording It Was A Very Good
Year. This clip was broadcast in December 1965 on a TV special about Sinatra's
50th year. Sinatra was born Dec 12, 1915.
Unlike Elvis, after
him, Sinatra overcame career failures and moved up to be a major star
in film and on stage. He lived a long life and was celebrated by his peers
in his lifetime. As he himself immortalised in song, he did it "my way".
September Of My Years
stands up to repeated listening as a classic record of its time as much
as Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit reflected Kurt Cobain's generation.
Sinatra's September reflection represents a rose-tinted world while rock
'n' roll was at times too brutal.
This copy has near
excellent stereo sound. But there are little skips at the beginning of
some tracks and what sounds like tape wear on others.
