ROIO of the Week [Recordings
of Indeterminate Origin]
The Great Wall
The
Wall was both a huge success for Pink Floyd as well as millstone. It usurped
band democracy and confirmed Roger Waters' authority. Eventually leading to the
band's demise. The Wall was performed a total of 30 times from February 1980 to
its final show at London's Earl's Court in June 1981.

The
Wall: The Master Tape [WallWeeds, 2CD]
Live Feb 28, 1980. This show is the final night at the Nassau Veterans
Memorial Coliseum, Long Island, New York, on the first leg of their world tour.
What's
on offer here is the master tape of the famous Nassau show from Feb 28. This is
the source for subsequent bootlegs made in Europe and elsewhere. Apparently,
the bootleggers used a copy of a copy. This version is direct from the master.
This
is one of the more popular of Pink Floyd Wall shows. It has appeared several
times as a bootleg - Wallpower and Great Dane's Brick By Brick are the two most
popular. This audience recording uses Japanese Nakamichi microphones that
capture the power, the depth and the live ambience perfectly making this
recording a serious rival to the official live compilation of The Wall that
Pink Floyd released in 2000.
On
CD2 track 10, Run Like Hell, Roger Waters says: "Do you like our pig? What?! He's not a very nice pig, but he's a BIG pig! This is
a song for all the paranoids in the audience; it's called 'Run Like Hell.' Home
piggy, home!"
This
phrase was spoken only at the Feb 28 show. The website Man of Leisure Music has
what they call The Wall Recording Identifier, where each show is confirmed by
what Roger Waters said. Check it out http://molm.org/wall/
Standouts
of this show:
-
Dave Gilmour's guitar solo on Young Lust.
-
Two songs that were left off the studio album, What Shall We Do Now and The
Last Few Bricks.
- A
furious reading of Run Like Hell that feels like Run Like F***.
This
was first shared in 2007 by the WallWeeds project, which offered every of the
30 shows from audience recordings. Here is the info they provided:
Taped
by unknown using Nakamichi 700 cardiod>d5W/ Dolby B. Located on the floor
section A, presumed to be in a central location just under the speakers.
"This is the one that the scum sucking bootleggers got a hold of and why
the Feb 26 show never circulated," posted Washac who was instrumental in
seeing that every Wall show was shared freely on the net. This copy is taken
from the master cassette, transferred to DAT and then CD-R.
For
"Wall" aficionados, this is the best show from the first leg of the
tour. While they were feeling their way with the performance which had to be
precisely coordinated with the building of the spectacular white wall, Pink
Floyd by the final night at Nassau were truly ripping. Roger is smoking, even
gleeful in a sinister way. This one is for fans of rock grandeur, the epitome
of progressive rock.
Our thanks to Washac for unleashing this version.

It wasn't until 2000, the 20th anniversary, that Pink Floyd put out a live performance of The Wall from the '80-'81 tour. This 2CD deluxe edition was compiled from shows at London's Earl's Court. It appears, the bulk of the material came from the 1981 shows in London. Buy it here.
