Patti
Smith & A Silver Mt Zion
Pop Montreal
2007 [no label, 2CD]
Live
at the Ukrainian Federation, Montreal, Canada, October 3, 2007.
Talk about interesting
rock team-ups. Even before the Black Album was officially released, the
team-up between Miles Davis and The Artist Who Was Formerly Talented (maybe
he still is) was a much sought-after recording which did not disappoint.
When Patti Smith
decided to do a last-minute poetry reading at the Ukrainian Federation
in Montreal with A Silver Mt Zion, some fans even feared that the set
would comprise Smith doing her own thing and then the Silver Mt Zion doing
theirs. Fortunately that was not the case - the Silver Mt Zion gamely
backed the singer-poet (just listen to their innovative and atmospheric
playing on Written By A Lake) and could be dramatically frenetic as on
Our Jargon Muffles The Drum.
However, the lack
of practice was evident when Smith fluffed Beneath The Southern Cross
but decided to carry on after putting her guitar aside. (Even in those
brief moments, the acoustic guitar certainly added another dimension to
the performance and music.)
This is very much
Smith's show - a little self-deprecating, gently humorous and when she's
onstage, you know she's the one holding the fort. This team-up with Silver
Mt Zion works because it seems easier to jam with someone reading a poem
than playing a "regular" song. Only that when they are on their own, as
on their instrumental pieces, the group has more freedom to soar, swoon
or plumb the depths.
Thanks to Emmanuel
for this very good audience recording ("recorded from the middle of audience,
seated") and to gthecock for the artwork.
This is what John777
wrote about the show on the Dime website:
"A great American
film director recently said 'It's hard to get lost when you don't know
where you're going'; which is no criticism of aimlessness but rather praise
for the fearlessness of thinking/acting/playing without a map. Over to
you, Patricia.
"Patti Smith is the
gently bemused face of Pop Montreal 2007, so much so that the last-minute
announcement of a poetry reading with A Silver Mt Zion providing backup
packs the Ukrainian Federation on an October night when the Habs were
winning and terraces were still open in Montreal. In her peace-sign jean
jacket and behind her Cassandran hair, Smith took the stage informing
that she 'came in late this afternoon and met all my new friends, and
decided to have an evening with you all. Don't know all of their names.
So they shall remain nameless.'
"Funny; at 60, Patti
Smith is still a shy girl beneath the accrued legend, the bright, charming
poet who dedicates one piece to 'three of my not-totally-imaginary boyfriends'
who turn out to be 'Johnny Appleseed, Ralph Nader and HP Lovecraft.'
"'I saw you/who was
myself/slightly stooped/whistling mouth,' she recited over Mt Zions
strings. The sight - with one member largely pregnant, and Smith asking
for blue overhead spots 'not because I'm weird, but because it's easier
to read' was exactly what this festival has come to represent to
those burned out from CMJ New York's over-regimented hype: free-form,
homespun and risk-taking. No great imaginative leap to suppose some in
the crowd were watching a heroine recite 'New Year's Ever. Rain. Two candles
light the room' while she slowly clawed at her collarbone, and dreaming
that the pop world might afford them the same room for self-expression.
"And good. 'It's
like being at the Philharmonic!' Smith said, before nixing her own guitar
involvement in one piece. 'I have learned in my 85 years of existence
that it's better to stop something when you know it's gonna be a disaster
than to go through it wishing you had.'
"The band was restrained
and musical rather than avant-teeth-gritting. Funnily enough, I had just
turned to Gazette critic Juan Rodriguez and said 'She's got a career in
standup if she ever decides to get a real job,' when Smith dismissed her
own comedic timing. But it wasn't about gags (though she was charmingly
funny as hell). Smith had borrowed that guitar from The Dears. 'I have
to say, that's a beautiful name for a band.' In fact, she was full of
praise, which was so Patti Smith, when this Festival has in fact aligned
itself to showcase and praise her."
