sessions 1975 in Los Angeles?
Of the five tracks
on this disc, only two have surfaced in a different form on the Plastic
Dildo Rehearsal bootleg. Kid Charlemagne and Green Earrings on the Dildo
boot were listed as demos and outtakes and had the vocals on top. These
sessions, however, are described as close to the final arrangements before
the vocals were added.
Said one
fan, BillfromPgh, who downloaded a copy:
"Very cool. This
appears to be tracking sessions with drums (Bernard Purdie?), bass (Becker
or Chuck Rainey), rhythm guitar and keys, no solos or horns yet, some
parts were replaced before the final version.
"Sign In Stranger
has a different piano part, probably [Donald] Fagen. I think the final
one was done by Victor Feldman. Lets you see just why Don and Walt [Walter
Becker] were such studio perfectionists - without the solos and vocals
in the foreground you can hear the amazing detail and interplay in the
rhythm section.
"A rare peek behind
the scenes. Not complete alternate versions as I'd hoped, but the bed
in which the familiar versions were planted."
With The Royal Scam,
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker threw away any pretence that Steely Dan
were "a band". Hence the album's title. Instead they were the auteurs,
assembling almost 40 musicians to play on this album. This amazing recording
offers the backing tracks before the vocal layerings. So as BillfromPgh
suggests, for the first time, you can marvel at the amount of precision,
effort and craft Fagen and Becker insisted on.
Only the final track,
Don't Take Me Alive, includes the vocals. We are grateful these tracks
were shared by lilpanda. If you want the lossless version go here.
These sessions are
in excellent quality and far better than the versions on the Plastic Dildo
Rehearsals bootleg. Best of all, they are different.
