(or why
we like to hear from you) BECK BETTER THAN BECK Extremely good going on the Beck '07s... woohoo. Thank you very much. Make sure you get some EC on this tour coming up. And Return To Forever is coming back after 25 years. Don't let that go either... peace. DarthCDRz Your
emails are now listed everyday on the BigO blog at A SMALL WORLD I like to tell you that you are doing a great job! It's great people can connect worldwide - just for the love to the music. Thank YOU!!!!!! Tony
Lauber SMITH'S POEM FOR BENAZIR I am a student at Skidmore College and I am writing an expose on Patti Smith's poetry for an online blog. I was wondering if you could send me the Poem (for Benazir Bhutto) track from your website. Thank you! Dan
Washko Thank you so very much for the Manassas show from Atlanta. I attended the show. I was a teenager and it was my very first concert. I work in the concert industry and have worked and attended thousands of shows over my lifetime but you never forget your first one. I just cannot thank you enough for the recording. I sincerely appreciate it. David
Scruggs I've been collecting live shows for years and it "amazes" me what the BigO unearths (BTW - I live within 10 minutes of Edwardsville, IL and the old MRF Site. The site - which I attended many times back in the day - of the 1969 Live Joni Mitchell show up now!) rob
b NYROTIC Hello, BigO. Love your publication. I noticed under your downloadable track list for Laura Nyro's show at the Fillmore East, that they are no longer available, and readers were asked to e-mail you if they wished to download the tracks. Well, I am a certified Nyrotic and there's probably very little I wouldn't give to hear this show. Is there any possible way this show can still be downloaded? Anon REPLY: You should have been provided with the link by now. THE GOOD FIGHT Hey, thanks again for all the great music and keep fighting the good fight (I'd not realized there were independent voices in $ingapore until finding yours). David You say on your web page "If you would like to listen to any of them, please email us in $ingapore to set up a trade." What exactly does this mean? I hope it means that you sell copies of the CD's for a reasonable price. If it is could you give me a price for the Jackson Browne demos? Paul
Chaplin REPLY:
We do trade - 1CD for 1CD. You have to sent us your tradelist of what
you have for us to choose from your list. We do not sell anything. This
collection is private and as a means to archive the music we love. On
occasion we do offer B&P (burn and post), that is you send us blank
CDs [plus extra blanks in lieu of return postage] and we copy the discs
you want. Of late it is getting difficult to trade or B&P as we are
very busy. +
+ + + + ASIAN DOWNLOADS I often check your website, very nice site and very good music, but I would like to find some Asian artists, for example I like very much the Japanese singers Utada Hikaru and Takako Matsu, the Thailandese Da Endorphine, the Korean Boa... Do you think will be possible to have something of them? Umberto
(from Italy) REPLY: There are none that we are aware of. Asian acts release DVD concerts quite frequently. These are official releases. +
+ + + + MICKEY NEWBURY Hello, I just ran across your site and story of the 1991 recording in Triad Studio. I have collected Newbury for years and would love to have this as well. I had the pleasure of meeting him in a club in Nashville around 1988. My songwriting friend introduced me to him saying I was so excited to get to meet him. As I reached for his hand, he smiled really big and put his hands around my face and said, "Well, bless your heart". Please let me know if there is a chance I could get this for my collection. Thank you, Barbara REPLY: Sure. You should have received the link by now. +
+ + + + WELL DONE, BOYS! I have to tell you, with your series 'No Country For Old Men' I find myself racing out of bed in the morning so I can see what's next before I go to work. Your website has been such a pleasure! I've just received the Clapton/Winwood show and I'm pretty sure I woke up half the block with my whoops and hollers. Tell TA [TaperAdvocate] he is a god among audiofiles. One more thing... my friends and I have this great game we play whenever we meet new people. We ask them what was the first concert they ever remember going to - it's quite fun. I can only imagine, 30 years from now, how this show will influence the young people who are at a live show for the first time and witnessing something they will probably never see again. Cheers to you! the

+ + + + DON McLEAN 1971 Thank you so much for this one! I taped this concert from the original broadcast when I was 14 years old, and incessantly listened to it for years. "Where were you baby" became one of the staples of my acoustic guitar shows in college, which I blatantly copied from this show. My original cassettes, which I still have, are barely playable now. So this fresh copy means the world to me. Jim

+ + + + This concert was actually my first one. I was a junior in high school in Ocala and went with my sister and my principle's son to see the show. That's how bad I wanted to go. During the Immigrant Song, Robert Plant would climb up on the stack of speakers and jump off, hitting the symbols on the way down. They also played some acoustics while John Bonham recovered after a long drum solo. Since the show I have remained a real fan of Led Zeppelin. I would love to download this if possible.
John REPLY: You should have been contacted by now. RE: HENDRIX AND THE YELLOW PANTIES The girl who was asking for the acoustic version of Hear My Train by Hendrix is confusing two different things... the only acoustic version can be seen/ heard in the Jimi film [Editor: 1973's Jimi Hendrix?] where he does it on a 12 string while sitting on a chair... as for the live rendition she recalls where Jimi dedicates it to the girl in the yellow underwear ...I have two binders full of Jimi boots and he uses this same line very often... also uses the one about tuning up saying you want us to be in tune only cowboys play out of tune. sluggo I believe the acoustic version you seek is on the album "Sound Track Recordings From The Film Jimi Hendrix". Alan
King REPLY:
I think Alan is referring to this 1973 film, Jimi Hendrix directed by
Joe Boyd, John Head and Gary Weis. Follow the link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070242/.
We have never seen this film before. Anyone out there have a nice copy
to share? The Mighty Boo wrote: "...the holiday season has me thinking about this one Henrico Caruso performance where he sang a version of "Holy Night". + + + + I've been tryin' for years to get a version of Jimi singing Hear My Train A Comin' (Gettin My Heart Back Together Again)... ACOUSTIC VERSION!! It was a concert!!! Someone told me it was Live in Winterland... but it's NOT!!! I've listened to every version I could find. The version I recall hearing had Jimi say: "I'd like to dedicate this song to the girl in the third row with the yellow underwear." But I've heard EVERYTHING AND CAN'T FIND IT! Can you help me please. "sylvia
butler" REPLY: Sorry. Anyone out there can help? CONFESSIONS OF A SUPERHERO I rented this on your recommendation and it was THE BEST DOCUMENTARY I'VE SEEN IN A DECADE! Documentaries are coming out left and right due to cheap digital video photog equipment but it still comes down to finding an interesting subject and, like most excellent docs, letting the subjects tell their own stories without an overdubbed narrative. Great movie! Thanks! Wink

+ + + + + REQUESTS Lucille
Feldhaus I've heard Liu Sola singing in the CD "China Collage" and I quite liked her voice and music. Is it possible to download "Fantasy Of The Red Queen" as you suggest on your page? Mauro
Montanari Thank you so much for providing me with this rare footage of my hero, Eric Clapton. If there is anything I can do to repay the debt let me know. I'd also like to become a member of this elite organisation and have the chance to aquire other unreleased material. How do I do that? Sean REPLY: We do restart shows, at least five every week over the weekend. If a show has not appeared for a long time, you can email us to remind us to restart a show. Or if there is a show in the audio archive that has yet to be shared, you can email a request for it. To keep up to date, you can join our free subscription list. You will receive a weekly emailer giving details of the week's new shows and other news. The email addresses are kept confidential. All the shows in our archive are from our collection. Nothing is for sale. We do our best to ensure that shows shared have never been officially released. We welcome all feedback.
That Irene Schweitzer recording is phenomenal - certainly not the usual "jazz meets India," which is something like The Dave Pike Quartet plus a sitar player. Really interesting to hear avant-garde jazz players improvising with (and to some degree against) classical Indian musicians. Thanks very much for letting me know about this and making it available. Now I'm going to check out some of Schweitzer's solo and duo CDs. Leo VAN LOST REVENUE? Thanks about spreading the word how Van the man is treating his core vans! harm FOR FREE Just wanted to say I do not know how you do it. Again! Yeah, I know I said the same thing recently but I have to say of late you have been surpassing yourselves. Patti Smith concerts practically the month after they were recorded!? Neil Young concerts the month after they were recorded. A John Prine - there are really NO boots of John P's live stuff worth a spit. Rarities like the Keith Jarret Dylan concert... I thought it was a myth! The Elvis Costello concerts - one a classic boot and one the entire My Aim Is True from a few weeks ago! Eric Clapton at The Royal Albert Hall better than direct from the BBC. HOW DO YOU DO THIS!?!?? Not only that but in time for the hullabaloo about Led Zeppelin performing again [and no I couldn't afford to go!] you released a slew of boots that included the 'Lost' Southampton gig which frankly is better that the official Mothership album. I don't consider myself a huge Zep fan but bought albums one and two when they were released and had to check out the missing concert. It is breathtaking and frankly how you come up with recordings of that quality is beyond me. I have an extensive collection of boots on vinyl - mostly The Doors and none of which match the quality of the majority of the music you are making available. I have a vinyl of the Isle of Wight Bob Dylan show which frankly sounds like an unplugged pub rock band recorded from the mainland (badly) through a pile of wet socks. I went to that one but can't remember ANY of it. Those were interesting times... Just wanted to say keep up the astonishingly fantastic work and more power to ya! Andy
Swapp REPLY: We definitely cannot take credit for this. Most of the material shared comes from torrent sites or from mail trade with collectors around the world. The real heroes are those fearless and intrepid men and women who spent time and money taping shows. These selfless individuals then post them on websites to share. With the internet, collecting has become a faster affair. Old time collectors are also more willing to take the trouble to upload their collections for free. Otherwise much of what has been collected over the past 40 years would be collecting dust in someone's home. And of course, all the singers and bands who approve of their fans sharing the music. +
+ + + + WONDERFUL So great to know a site like this... Miles Davis Zeppelin Floyd... all in the same place... and if you don't check it regularly you live in danger of missing a rare Hendrix show... wonderful! Kookie I have never heard of you guys but I was amazed to learn that this Fairport Convention 2007 Reunion concert took place and I would love to get copies of these songs. I was a huge fan of this album when I was younger and I was astonished to learn that it is considered so influential in England -- in the United States people who listen to this sort of thing are considered... well I just keep it to myself for the most part. I don't need anybody calling me The Hobbit or whatever... So, I guess the FBI and everybody will be at your throats soon enough, but in the meantime would it be possible for me to get downloads of these recordings? John

Gotta vote for The Strollers! It's fantastic. Andrew
Werling My vote is for the Strollers. All the best. Ramon
Felis REPLY: Our poll on whether Malaysian band The Strollers or Okervill River did the best version of Jimmy Webb's Do What You Gotta Do shows the Malaysian band is tops. ISLE OF WIGHT I am a Bob Dylan fan, and as any Dylan fan knows four tracks of this Isle Of Wight bootleg have been officially released by Columbia Records on the Self Portrait album, which is still available in most countries. The tracks (live location not explicitly credited on the album) are: - 01 She
Belongs To Me Richard REPLY: That's correct. The version we shared was an audience recording, unique because it was recorded close to the stage. We left the four tracks in to offer as complete a show as possible without resorting to the soundboard versions. +
+ + + + CARUSO FOR CHRISTMAS Do you all ever run across any classical gem recordings? The reason I ask is the holiday season has me thinking about this one Henrico Caruso performance where he sang a version of "Holy Night". It was an extremely old recording off of vinyl but his voice was so powerful it literally crashed through the limitations of the technology of the time to the point where I felt as though he was sitting on the sofa next to me. I would also be interested in any other great classical recordings you all may have run across. Thanks so much for what you have given me. the
mighty boo REPLY:
Does any reader have a copy of this rarity? It should be in the public
domain and can be shared. Your site is a killer. Ike played paino on Rocket 88... the guitar was played by Willie Kizart. Willie tuned down 1/2 step to Eb, so he could be in a key more suitable to the horns and piano. The full line-up for that session was Ike Turner - piano, bandleader; Jackie Brenston - vocal, tenor sax; Raymond Hill - tenor sax; Willie Sims - drums. Raymond Hill was name-checked the Jackie when he said "blow your horn, Raymond...BLOW". Raymond Hill was with Tina before Ike was, and Raymond fathered Tina's first child. Rocket 88 was recorded on March 3, 1951 and Ike really didn't start playing guitar until sometime in 1952. Thanks for posting the Cream show from 1967... killer stuff. Too bad all of those shows that were recorded in March of 1968 (that resulted in the live tracks from "Wheels Of Fire") have all been lost, stolen, thrown out or destroyed. Polygram has nothing left in their vaults to release, and have acknowledged that even though 6-8 shows were recorded, nothing remains except the masters from "Wheels Of Fire". I have one alternate version of "Steppin' Out" from those concerts. It's different from the version on "Live Cream, Vol 2". John
Ellis REPLY: Ike probably didn't play on River Deep Mountain High but he was a pioneer of rock 'n' roll. Too bad so many heroes are so shabbily treated. The Stones 2007 boot we are offering this week is a keeper. HENDRIX AT MIAMI POP FEST Thanks for the above. Great. If you ever find the Grateful Dead concert at the THEE Image on Miami Beach in April, '68, I'll be the first to buy it. That is one performance that has yet to surface. Ed REPLY: Any reader has the Dead show mentioned above? IT'S A MYSTERY Well, you got me. I know it is Leonard Cohen's beautiful song... [ever heard the version k.d. lang sang live at the Canadian Junos awards it'll leave you speechless] but I can't place the singer at all. Keep it up. I love being fooled. Have a Merry Christmas and all the best for a great 2008. sluggo +
+ + + + Thank you for using my concert review. It's an honor. I regret using the comment about "fast forwarding past the forgettable opening acts". The "forgettable" opening acts comment came from the perspective of myself at age 16. Before 1974, my previous musical taste was a steady diet of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc. I learned just recently that Herbie Hancock and Malo where on the Winterland 73/74 New Years bill! Maybe I was stuck in the snack bar line. Most likely, I just wasn't into their music back then. It wasn't long after 1973 that I grew to appreciate and enjoy Hancock and Malo. I wished I was knowledgeable enough that night to pay attention. When rediscovering my review, written January 1, 1974, I didn't notice any mention of the other acts besides Journey. I did, however remember that Winterland used to have some really bad opening acts during this era (imho) and my memory has blurred some of these shows together. Jim
Deplitch REPLY: Thank you for writing. SPREAD THE CHEER I just wanted to thank you so much for your kindness, my girlfriend will be so thrilled. The night Tom Waits played was just magical and to be able to re-live a small part of it any time we want is just unbelievable. I've bookmarked your site and will spread the word of it and your kindness to anyone who will listen and even to those who won't! Chuck REPLY: Readers can request for older shows. We will do our best to keep them alive. For more... email mybigo@bigozine.com with the message, "Put me on your mailing list."
