composers and the performance, as the ensemble's motto has it, of 'tomorrow's
music today.' Here
are three selections performed by Contempo artists-in-residence.
The Pacifica Quartet performs Black Angels, George Crumb's dark and cathartic
piece inspired by Vietnam. The sextet, Eighth Blackbird, performs Chen
Yi's dramatic work 'Qi,' which combines influences from both her native
China and her adopted home in America. The final selection is British
composer Jonathan Harvey's 'Song Offerings,' which pairs translations
of mystical Bengali love poems with unusual sounds to create a song cycle
depicting rapture and ecstatic love." Ex FM stereo 56.06m

"Elton Dean (born
Oct 28, 1945, Nottingham, England; died Feb 8, 2006) was a jazz musician
who performed on alto saxophone, saxello (a variant of the soprano saxophone)
and occasionally piano. In 1966-67, Dean was a member of the band Bluesology,
led by Long John Baldry. The band's pianist, Reginald Dwight, afterward
combined Dean's and Baldry's first names for his own stage name, Elton
John. Dean established his reputation as a member of the Keith Tippett
Sextet from 1968 to 1970, and in the band Soft Machine from 1969 to 1972.
Shortly before leaving Soft Machine he started his own group, Just Us.
From 1975 to 1978 he led a nine-piece band called Ninesense. His own groups
since then, usually quartets or quintets, have most often worked in the
free jazz mode, with little or no pre-composed material
In 2002,
Dean and three other former Soft Machine members (Hugh Hopper, drummer
John Marshall, and guitarist Allan Holdsworth) toured and recorded under
the name Soft Works. With another former Soft Machine member, guitarist
John Etheridge, replacing Holdsworth, they subsequently toured and recorded
as Soft Machine Legacy, playing some pieces from the original Soft Machine
repertoire as well as new works. Dean's last musical collaborations included
those with Soft Bounds (a quartet comprising Hugh Hopper, Sophia Domancich
and Simon Goubert), Alex Maguire's project Psychic Warrior, and Belgian
rock-jazz band The Wrong Object."

version of DeJohnette's "Earth Walk" CD (which was issued on Blue Note;
sadly, it is now out-of-print). Little needs to be said about the music
except that in my opinion the live recordings by this group were superior
than the afore-mentioned studio CD and that this recording certainly rewards
repeated listenings. The sound quality is excellent (one of my own recordings)."

Thomas (ts, fl), Marvin Sewell (g), Michael Cain (p, keyb), Lonnie Plaxico
(b, el-b), Jack DeJohnette (dr). "
the studio recordings do not document
this group well. This is especially true for this particular line-up which
appears on two tracks only on the issued studio CD ("Extra Special Edition",
Blue Note). The rest of that CD also features singer Bobby McFerrin
and a second percussionist on some kind of improvised studio jams.
This live recording from Cologne certainly comes closer to what this
group was able to do, I think." Ex FM stereo.

Steve Lacy
Quintet - East Berlin 1977 [no
label 1CD dime: 229961] live at Jazzbühne,
East-Berlin, GDR, Apr 9, 1977. "Here's a short radio broadcast of the
Steve Lacy Quintet. I find this recording remarkable since, with
"Revolutionary Suicide" and "Papa's Midnight Hop", it
includes two quite rare vocal numbers. In case of the latter piece, this
recording, as far as I know, even is the only vocal-version available in Lacy's massive body of recorded music. The music is
captured quite nicely (~A-), but there's various noises, buzzes and crackles
going in and out here and there, while not too distracting." - Scholleck2.
In 1977, the Steve Lacy Quintet was invited to West-Berlin to take part in the
Workshop Freie Musik, lasting
from 7.4.77 to 11.4.77. So for this concert in East-Berlin, the band apparently
made a little excursion when having a day off from the Workshop. It was during
this festival, more precisely on the last day, that they recorded the beautiful
"Follies"-LP for FMP/SAJ." Lineup: Steve Lacy: ss; Steve Potts. as,ss; Irene Aebi: cello, voc, violin; Kent Carter: b; Oliver Johnson:
