"Elton Dean (born Oct 28, 1945, Nottingham, England; died Feb 8, 2006) was a jazz musician who performed on alto saxophone, saxello (a variant of the soprano saxophone) and occasionally piano. In 1966-67, Dean was a member of the band Bluesology, led by Long John Baldry. The band's pianist, Reginald Dwight, afterward combined Dean's and Baldry's first names for his own stage name, Elton John. Dean established his reputation as a member of the Keith Tippett Sextet from 1968 to 1970, and in the band Soft Machine from 1969 to 1972. Shortly before leaving Soft Machine he started his own group, Just Us. From 1975 to 1978 he led a nine-piece band called Ninesense. His own groups since then, usually quartets or quintets, have most often worked in the free jazz mode, with little or no pre-composed material… In 2002, Dean and three other former Soft Machine members (Hugh Hopper, drummer John Marshall, and guitarist Allan Holdsworth) toured and recorded under the name Soft Works. With another former Soft Machine member, guitarist John Etheridge, replacing Holdsworth, they subsequently toured and recorded as Soft Machine Legacy, playing some pieces from the original Soft Machine repertoire as well as new works. Dean's last musical collaborations included those with Soft Bounds (a quartet comprising Hugh Hopper, Sophia Domancich and Simon Goubert), Alex Maguire's project Psychic Warrior, and Belgian rock-jazz band The Wrong Object."

This is especially true for this particular line-up which appears on two tracks only on the issued studio CD ("Extra Special Edition", Blue Note). The rest of that CD also features singer Bobby McFerrin and a second percussionist on some kind of improvised studio jams. This live recording from Cologne certainly comes closer to what this group was able to do, I think." Ex FM stereo.

Michael Gibbs - At Ronnie Scott's 1972: OUTTAKES [no label 1CD Torrent: 168214] live at Ronnie Scott's May 31 and June 1, 1972. "Just Ahead" [Polydor], recorded live at Ronnie Scott's, was one of the musical high points in UK jazz of the late 60s and early 70s. Reissued on BGOCD679 in 2005, it featured the cream of UK jazz musicians in a context of such richness and warmth that it inspired some of their finest and most cohesive playing. What you have here is 77 minutes of material of such quality that only considerations of space can have excluded it from the double LP or cd release. The sound isn't the very best but I'd give it an A-.Lineup: Kenny Wheeler, Henry Lowther (tp, flgl horn); Chris Pyne (tbn), Malcolm Griffiths (tbn, tenor & bass tbn), Geoff Perkins (b tbn); Ray Warleigh (as, fl, a fl), Stan Sulzmann (ss, ts, fl, picc), Alan Skidmore (ss, ts, fl, a fl); Dave MacRae (fender rhodes); Chris Spedding (g); Roy Babbington (bg); John Marshall (dr); Frank Ricotti (vibes, perc). "Recorded on unknown professional equipment > low generation tape > cdr > wav > flac; Despite its pedigree, the sound isn't the very best. I'd give it A-. The shortcomings are due in part to the original transfer process, I suppose, and partly to the engineering or mixing. I think it was probably done for a local radio station but not broadcast." - 6135terry. One track is incomplete. VG+ to Ex- SBD stereo.

"A great performance, the original source of which which was marred by a lot of hiss and which the OP originally rated only A-/B+, so I did a lot of changes and posted my v1 remaster. With Charlie's untimely death, NWR broadcasted tracks 03-06 as a tribute. It is significantly better SQ, with of course no hiss, and has slightly longer tracks (so the original was edited). It also has all of Charlie' announcements and track count-ins, in a different track order which I believe now is the correct order. Since posting v2, Dimer Goody came up with speed correction for the first two tracks (thanks) which are a good SQ improvement and allowed phase offset correction to be identified, which gives a further improvement still, so I hope folks will like this 'definitive' v3 edition. Tracks 03-06 are unchanged from the v2 edition." - TomP. Ex FM stereo. TT: 110m. TomP shared August 2014. DATA FILE ONLY

Steve Lacy Quintet -  East Berlin 1977 [no label 1CD dime: 229961] live at Jazzbühne, East-Berlin, GDR, Apr 9, 1977. "Here's a short radio broadcast of the Steve Lacy Quintet. I find this recording remarkable since, with "Revolutionary Suicide" and "Papa's Midnight Hop", it includes two quite rare vocal numbers. In case of the latter piece, this recording, as far as I know, even is the only vocal-version available in Lacy's massive body of recorded music. The music is captured quite nicely (~A-), but there's various noises, buzzes and crackles going in and out here and there, while not too distracting." - Scholleck2. In 1977, the Steve Lacy Quintet was invited to West-Berlin to take part in the Workshop Freie Musik, lasting from 7.4.77 to 11.4.77. So for this concert in East-Berlin, the band apparently made a little excursion when having a day off from the Workshop. It was during this festival, more precisely on the last day, that they recorded the beautiful "Follies"-LP for FMP/SAJ."
