THE BigO AUDIO ARCHIVE
Readers are welcomed to contribute and share their favourite music on the BigO site. As we are trying to maintain a credible audio archive, we would prefer the music to be in a lossless format (unlike, say, the lossy MP3). Readers can either (snail) mail the music to us at BigO, PO Box 784, Marine Parade, $ingapore 914410 or they can upload the files (flac format would be ideal) onto their own site or a free site and contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the links or if they have any queries.
Readers are also encouraged to check out our audio archives first before sending us the files to avoid duplication. And to avoid any misunderstanding, BigO reserves the right to decide on all music shared.

Rockarchiv: Musikladen Highlights Vol 1, 2 [no label, 2DVD PAL hungercity 6437, 6454]
The opening shots in a new series highlighting the myriad treasures still
lurking in the archive of Germany’s number one rock and pop TV show round up a
very esoteric selection of performances, with little regard for either
chronology or content. Shifting,
on volume one, from Little Feat and 10cc (a beautifully shot “I’m Not In
Love”), to Steeleye Span and Suzi Quatro, and onto Rachel Sweet and Tina Turner, the
sharp-eyed remote controller nevertheless needs negotiate the likes of the Jacksons, Hall & Oates and Meatloaf, while the
mid-1970s were scarcely Billy Preston’s finest hour. Unless, of course, you happen to like him, in which case
your own view of this collection might well lean the other way entirely.
Sparks (a histrionic “Something For The Girl With Everything”) and Nazareth
(that throat-scarring “Love Hurts”) should be highlights in anybody’s book,
though, while volume two’s exhumation of performances by Marianne Faithful
(“Ballad of Lucy Jordan”) and Lene Lovich (a completely mad “Bird Song”) are likewise above
criticism. Unfortunately, the
remainder of that disc seems devoted to upsetting any sense you may have had of
what really made the music industry tick through the latter half of the
'70s. Madness tip a hat to the
2-Tone movement, but return visits from Tina Turner, Suzi Quatro and Rachel Sweet are accompanied by the likes
of Wilson Pickett, Robert Palmer, Sister Sledge and, saints preserve us, the
New Riders of the Purple Sage. Oh,
and a spot of bizarre Europop from Tim Curry,
complete with a cod foreign accent and a band that must be seen to be believed.
So, something for everyone, and everything’s for someone - which was
always what made Musikladen so exciting in the first place. Wonderful quality as well. - Dave

Makoto Kawabata - Private Tapes Vol 1-5 [no label 5CD] These five discs
are from an 8-CD set packaged as the Private Tapes from Kawabata Makoto,
the driving force behind the legendary Acid Mothers Temple. CD6-8 are
not included here. These recordings have never been officially released.
This is a mixed bag of stuff from Kawabata's solo work and in collaboration
with various artists. There are some real gems to be found here, though
they're often squished between some pretty rough material. But if you're
a fan of Kawabata, Acid Mothers Temple, or Japanese psych rock in general,
this collection is a must have. Every track is gloriously awash in Kawabata's
characteristically thick layers of distortion and psychedelic freak noise,
nicely complemented by the less than pristine recordings that capture
him. These are bootlegs in the greatest spirit of bootlegs, circulated
by the artist himself as works that provide expanded insight into the
curriculum of one of Japan's most prolific musicians.
This set was purchased
by a fan and was numbered 3/30. It was purchased from Kawabata himself
when he played a solo show at La Salla Rosa in Montreal, Quebec in October
of 2002. Ex SBD stereo

Ryan Adams - 48 Hours [no label 1CD] Unreleased album
recorded in 48 hours, May 2001. The story: "Of course, as soon as "Gold"
was finished, Ryan went into full freak-out mode. Inspired by a "mind-boggling"
show by his friend Alanis Morissette at Los Angeles's El Rey Theater in
May 2001, he immediately started writing again, called up producer Ethan
Johns, and was back in the studio that same week. A full album was recorded
and mixed in two days - which is why this batch of songs was titled "48
Hours." The sound he was going for was "a country-folk thing like 'John
Wesley Harding' or 'Workingman's Dead,' with some shitkicking Merle Haggard
stuff in there" - the glorious "Hallelujah" and the irresistible, twangy
"Chin Up, Cheer Up" certainly make for a dramatic contrast with the "Suicide"
songs Ryan's touring musicians took on an alternate life as a garage band
called the Pinkhearts - he even flummoxed the crowd at Austin's 2001 South
By Southwest festival by turning his much-touted showcase into a raucous
Pinkhearts set. Back in Nashville, with CDs by Sonic Youth, the Stooges,
and Nirvana propped up on the mixing board for divine guidance, the band
knocked out dozens of Replacements-style bash 'n' pop songs over two separate
sessions." Ex SBD stereo.

The Byrds - In The Studio (Capricorn Recordings 1CD demon 3012274) This release on 'Capricorn Recordings' appears to be a copy of Journals, vol 9, a sort of Best Of from the 'Journals' mammoth 8-CD fan project. "Comprised of alternate versions, false starts, and backing tracks of songs from The Byrds' first three LPs, you're not going to turn to this for casual listening. But as academic documents of major groups go, this is first-rate, with 70 minutes of music, sparkling sound, and a chance to hear the group polishing their material in the studio. No radically different takes or arrangements surface, but aficionados will be especially interested in the appearance of the backing track to "Stranger In A Strange Land," a long-rumored Byrds original that had never even appeared on bootleg before. The Byrds - Straight For The Sun 1971 (All Acess 1CD demon 3012276) live at McDonough Gym, American University in Washington DC, September 12, 1971, for a college AM radio broadcast. This was the well respected late Byrds lineup of McGuinn/White/Battin/Parsons. "This Byrds concert, from the McDonough Gym at the American University in Washington DC, came just after the end of a major European tour, which had seen the band playing many gigs up and down the UK (including the Lincoln Festival and at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall) as well as in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany between May and August 1971. For this radio broadcast, The Byrds chose to perform an eclectic cross-section of material, drawing from albums across their career to date. From those recorded by the same line-up come the dynamic 'Lover of the Bayou' and McGuinn's perennial ballad 'Chestnut Mare' (from Untitled), 'I Want To Grow Up To Be A Politician', 'Citizen Kane' (from Byrdmaniax) and 'Tiffany Queen' (from Farther Along). Delving way back into their illustrious history, the band draw on a slew of Sixties classics including their hit version of Dylan's 'Mr. Tambourine Man' (from the eponymous 1965 debut album), 'Mr. Spaceman' and 'Eight Miles High' (from 1966's Fifth Dimension) and 'So You Want To Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star' (Younger Than Yesterday, 1967). Gram Parsons brief sojourn with The Byrds is recalled via a version of 'Pretty Boy Floyd' (from Sweetheart of the Rodeo 1968). The subsequent Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde (1969) is represented by the sparkling instrumental 'Nashville West' (co-written by Clarence and Gene Parsons) whilst 1969's Ballad of Easy Rider album contributes 'Jesus Is Just Alright'. Finally, there are versions of the traditional 'Black Mountain Rag (Soldier's Joy)' and set-closer Chuck Berry's rocking 'Roll Over Beethoven'. In short, a superb aural snapshot of a band at an undoubted peak in an unusually tumultuous career." (from the liner notes) VG+ AM stereo. Released on CD by 'All Access' in 2013. DATA FILE ONLY

There are two circulating recordings for the six-show run, the first captured on a Uher 5" portable reel to reel and the second offered here, both recordings have been dated over the years as capturing the 26th and the 31st... As is often the case with tapes this old, playback wasn't easy. The tapes required re-shelling and multiple playback passes to get the full recording transferred without squeaks and distortion. The result is quite listenable and hopefully offers a modest upgrade to the best circulating version." PERRO Sessions [4CD] Here is an expanded version of the Planet Earth Rock
And Roll Orchestra sessions normally traded as a 2-disc set. This set
offers insight into the David Crosby sessions that resulted in the 1971
release of his first solo effort, If I Could Only Remember My Name. Extended
versions of six of the album's nine songs are played here with Jerry Garcia
and Phil Lesh in pristine form. Said to be a milestone for West Coast
rock as it avoided the excess of singer-songwriter confessions to focus
on mood-building and the wordless feeling of deja vu. Crosby's girlfriend
had been killed in an auto accident the previous year. Listening to the
various jams with piano, violin and the twin guitars of Garcia and Jorma
Kaukonen, this was some of the most original ambient music to come out
of 1971. The sessions were produced by Stephen Barncard and discovered
in 1991 when Atlantic were researching to compile a Crosby, Stills &
Nash boxset. Read the Mojo review of the Crosby album in the Jan 1999
issue. Excellent stereo sound. For more info go to http://crosbynash.com/perro.html

Koucky September 30, 2007. His comment: "The sound on this transfer is
amazing, totally crackles. I broke the two hours into individual files
by date and mastered them separately and then dithered them to 44.1 as
the two discs. I adjusted the L-R db anywhere from -3 to +3 and kept the
same eq adjustments with a boost of midrange and decrease lows and highs
and adjusted the threshold in the maximizer so all is full." Ex SBD stereo. http://www.shnflac.net/details.php?id=
David Crosby - Ultimate
Perro Tapes 2008 [no label 2CD pinkrobert 1821]recorded at Wally Heider's
Studio, San Francisco, January 2-14, 1971. "The first "new" recordings
started to circulate in 2007 with the compilation of IICORMN and PERRO
tracks in the superior quality than ever before. The bootleg was called
"Everybody Here Can Be In The Band", but on the torrent sites it was called
"David Crosby Sessions" or "IICORMN - The Sessions". Later in the year,
three sets of tracks started to circulate under titles: "Acoustic", "Electric"
and "Residue", all in similar superior quality. Some of the tracks were
of suspicious origin, but the improvement in quality was obvious.
"The set in your
hands is the best quality and the most complete collection of genuine
IIORMN outtakes and the best quality versions of PERRO tracks." - Pink

The Band - Woodstock
[Homer Entertainment Network 1CD Torrent: 54360] live at Yasgur's Farm,
Sunday, Aug 17, 1969 at 10:30 pm. "Long Black Veil" and "The Weight" appeared
on the Woodstock 25th anniversay box set and have been removed from my
copy. There was a previous version of this that came out in 2000, but
the sound quality of this recording is dramatically improved. For whatever
reason, Robbie Robertson's microphone being turned on the most prevelant,
this was never released on the original Woodstock album nor was any of
the music used in the movie. However "The Weight" was used in the "Woodstock:
The Lost Performances" video released some years ago. As a result of this,
some never even knew The Band played Woodstock, and for those that did
few ever got to hear anything until the box set. Ex SBD stereo. Artwork
