PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS
The Alternate Wild Life [Pear 1CD JPGR 7738]

Ah, where would Paul McCartney be without Wild Life? The critics may have hated it, the fans may have mocked it, but if you want to pinpoint the moment where he finally put his past behind him, and remembered that music is meant to be fun, and a band is meant to be full of your friends, Wild Life was it. Maybe he didn't seem to be breaking a sweat across half of it. But the other half is McCartney at his best. The Alternate Wild Life is exactly what it claims to be, a gathering of "alternate" versions of the original LP's contents, pulled from hither and thither, but serving up very little that you won't have heard elsewhere. Which isn't to deny the fact that it's fun, because you have to love the reggae-fied instrumental punch through "Tomorrow," and the crude homespun demo of "Dear Friend," as stately a beauty in the Macca front room with the kids playing all around, as it is on the finished album.

Outtakes from the sessions, meanwhile, include a knockabout "Yes Indeed I Do," "Cage," "Waterspout," "The Great Cock And Seagull Race," the foolish "Blackpool" and the utterly irresistible "African Yeah Yeah," a few jams apparently designed to test out Linda's new synth, excerpts from One Hand Clapping... okay, it does all get a little boring after a while, as fragment follows half-realized vision, and you start longing for the disc to end long before the 14 bonus tracks are through. But you asked for an alternate Wild Life, and you certainly got it. - Dave Thompson

ALBERT AYLER QUARTET
The Hilversum Session [ESP Disk]

You can't imitate freedom. Simply because there's always a high price to pay for the real item. These European gigs for free jazz sax legend, Albert Ayler, might not have sounded so good had band member and bassist, Gary Peacock, not made it. Not having eaten for 15 days, Peacock had to be dragged out of bed just to catch the boat to Europe at the end of August, 1964. The other key element that makes this gig so precious is the addition of Don Cherry on cornet. Hearing this session is like hearing Ayler's groundbreaking debut, Spiritual Unity (1964), with one more member, the quietly forceful Don Cherry.

While no one can take the stage from Ayler when he starts honking, braying and snorting to the roof of any concert hall, Cherry punctuates him. Ayler by himself is like a conversation that's a stream of unconsciousness. Together with Cherry, Ayler gets to stop and reflect on what's he's just said. Murray too plays with great empathy sometimes propelling the group, at other times, just providing space for them to soar.

The Hilversum Session has been available previously through the Japanese and the Europeans but it's so good that it's a treat to have it available again. In many ways, this is also a companion piece to Vibrations (Freedom). While Vibrations was recorded on Sept 14 in a Copenhagen studio, the Hilversum Session took place, also in a studio, on Nov 9 in Holland. But the Hilversum Session sounds like a live recording compared to Vibrations. Just compare the two treatments of Ghosts, the Hilversum version is looser and Ayler clips the melody by rushing through it. Yet Vibrations was a one take affair and the track listing is exactly as it was recorded. Which just proves the brilliance of Ayler, he could be as tight or free-wheeling as he wanted. It was always about finding the centre and feeling of the sound. Hilversum also had the slower, sadder tracks beginning with the dirge-like Angels and ending with No Name.

1964 was the year the Beatles conquered America. It was also the year when Albert Ayler made his debut and his breakthrough and some of the fiercest music ever heard. It was also the time when Americans had no time for their own jazz musicians and when American free jazz instead conquered Europe. (8) - Philip Cheah

ELVIS PRESLEY
The Demos [FTD]

It is one of two CDs enclosed with the FTD book, Writing For The King.

Heartbreak Hotel: A very primitive demo. Glen Reeves is a lousy singer and his phrasing is different from Elvis' interpretation. Can't understand why Elvis flipped over this one, but I guess it was special for its time...

Teddy Bear: Sounds like black R&B. Otis is a good singer. It's actually a shuffle and more vibrant and "fun" than Elvis' lifeless version.

Hard Headed Woman: Great stuff, 'cept for a horrendous piano solo. Another R&B song. Doesn't Jimmy Breedlove sing "Hot Headed Woman"?

Trouble: Lord what an echo! I don't like the unknown singer. Guitar solo is terrible.

Wear My Ring Around Your Neck: Gus Coletti sounds like a typical ballad singer. I like the girls singing back-up. Great song.

Pocketful Of Rainbows: I don't like the screaming girls. Too many unnecessary breaks. Breedlove is a mediocre singer.

No More: Amateurish. Elvis' rendition is about a thousand times better. This is a sleeping pill.

His Latest Flame: Mort Shuman is a pretty decent singer and actually sounds a bit like Elvis. Fantastic song, one of Elvis' best from the '60s.

Good Luck Charm: Much better than Elvis' version, but that's not so hard to accomplish, since our hero sounds like he's half asleep on this one! Robert Moseley is an okay singer.

Devil In Disguise: Elvis made a carbon copy of the demo, though obviously the boy from Memphis had more "power" in his voice. But Bill Giant is still a good singer. Great song.

Viva Las Vegas: Is this Mort Shuman singing??? Listen to "His Latest Flame" and compare!

C'Mon Everybody: I like this one better than Elvis' uninspired version. Bob "Is it rolling, Bob?" Johnston tries to emulate Elvis' singing style. Nick name clue: Listen to NASHVILLE SKYLINE, at the beginning of "To Be Alone With You".

Kissin' Cousins: Cool! It certainly has a groove that Elvis' cut lacks. Makes up for the poor vocal performance by Malcolm Dodd.

My Desert Serenade: A revelation! Never liked Elvis' stab at it, but this is really good. Credit to Stan Gelber!

The Love Machine: Sounds good, in spite of the singer (Gerald Nelson). The young (?) drummer plays a little too much.

Clambake: Rejected version. Why the hell didn't Elvis choose this one? Excellent singing by song writer Winfield "Return To Sender" Scott.

Wearin' That Loved-On Look: It's like a completely different song. I don't know about you, but I'll take Elvis' version any day. Poor singing by Dallas Frazier. How come Elvis wanted to record this shit? (They're singing "sheep, sheep", aren't they?)

I've Lost You: Peter Sterling is a dreadful singer (reminds me a bit of P.J. Proby), but GREAT SONG! Thank God Elvis changed, "I don't need you anymore" to "I can't reach you anymore"... Awful ending, though.

The Next Step Is Love (Sex): Paul Evans is a good singer, and just like Elvis, he's got problems w/ the key change. Demo is a little overproduced.

Mary In The Morning: Johnny Cymbal sounds like Charlie Manson! Yuck!

Burning Love: I agree w/ PKF, Dennis Linde sounds a bit like John Fogerty. This is more "sophisticated" than Elvis' studio recording (which I never liked - thank God he improved it live) and lacks a little punch, but it's still a great demo.

T-R-O-U-B-L-E: This f**ker can't sing. Jerry Chesnut's vocals makes me think of Doug Poindexter, that geezer with whom Scotty & Bill played with before hooking up with "The Hillbilly Cat".

Raised On Rock: GREAT! Elvis SLAUGHTERED this one. Mark James ("Suspicious Minds", "Hooked On A Feeling" - immortalized by Bjorn Skifs) is a fantastic singer with a voice full of soul. He makes me think of Stephen Stills. Great musicians, too! Elvis changed the line, "I was in the back room, diggin' the Stones".

Way Down: High-voice singing Layng Martine, Jr. struggles with his own composition. Funny that Elvis fell for this one - and actually improved it! Strange clicking sound on my CD that is extremely annoying!

Well, there you have it. This project has been a long time coming. Let's hope FTD releases one more CD with demos! - Crister Berge

Note: I'd like to thank Michael for allowing me to hear P.J. Proby's demo of "Fun In Acapulco" last night.

Follow That Dream is an exclusive Elvis specialty label run out of Denmark by BMG. Norwegian fan Oven Egeland who runs the fan site, Elvis Is Still Active In Norway, keeps track of the releases. FTD releases are all officially approved releases but extremely limited. Crister Berge (joncburrows@hotmail.com) contributes reviews on the site.

During the OM riff, the members of The Occasion jumped on stage; and a wild free for all occurred. Thanks to Justin, Makoto, & Hiroshi for convincing the club to let me record (the club had a strict policy of not letting any recordings take place). This is the raw mix from the soundboard." [Acid Mothers Temple]
Makoto Kawabata - Private Tapes Vol 1-5 [no label 5CD] These five discs are from an 8-CD set packaged as the Private Tapes from Kawabata Makoto, the driving force behind the legendary Acid Mothers Temple. CD6-8 are not included here. These recordings have never been officially released. This is a mixed bag of stuff from Kawabata's solo work and in collaboration with various artists. There are some real gems to be found here, though they're often squished between some pretty rough material. But if you're a fan of Kawabata, Acid Mothers Temple, or Japanese psych rock in general, this collection is a must have. Every track is gloriously awash in Kawabata's characteristically thick layers of distortion and psychedelic freak noise, nicely complemented by the less than pristine recordings that capture him. These are bootlegs in the greatest spirit of bootlegs, circulated by the artist himself as works that provide expanded insight into the curriculum of one of Japan's most prolific musicians.

This set was purchased by a fan and was numbered 3/30. It was purchased from Kawabata himself when he played a solo show at La Salla Rosa in Montreal, Quebec in October of 2002. Ex SBD stereo

Ryan Adams - 48 Hours [no label 1CD] Unreleased album recorded in 48 hours, May 2001. The story: "Of course, as soon as "Gold" was finished, Ryan went into full freak-out mode. Inspired by a "mind-boggling" show by his friend Alanis Morissette at Los Angeles's El Rey Theater in May 2001, he immediately started writing again, called up producer Ethan Johns, and was back in the studio that same week. A full album was recorded and mixed in two days - which is why this batch of songs was titled "48 Hours." The sound he was going for was "a country-folk thing like 'John Wesley Harding' or 'Workingman's Dead,' with some shitkicking Merle Haggard stuff in there" - the glorious "Hallelujah" and the irresistible, twangy "Chin Up, Cheer Up" certainly make for a dramatic contrast with the "Suicide" songs Ryan's touring musicians took on an alternate life as a garage band called the Pinkhearts - he even flummoxed the crowd at Austin's 2001 South By Southwest festival by turning his much-touted showcase into a raucous Pinkhearts set. Back in Nashville, with CDs by Sonic Youth, the Stooges, and Nirvana propped up on the mixing board for divine guidance, the band knocked out dozens of Replacements-style bash 'n' pop songs over two separate sessions." This was also meant to be part of the 4-CD Demolition set on Lost Highway Records. Ex SBD stereo. There is a flutter on Tk 1 around the 4 min mark.

Ryan Adams - Cowboy Technical Sessions 2001 [no label 1CD Torrent: 83354] Session in New York. Alice Cooper Group - Portland 1973 [no label 1CD Torrent: 90100] live in Portland, OR, May 25, 1973. "Another partial soundboard from the Billion $ Babies tour. This is missing Hello Hooray, B$B, Elected/18, Raped & Freezin', NMMNG, the beginning of My Stars and there's a nasty cut in I Love the Dead @ 1:14 and contains more pre-recorded stuff than actual playing. Hey, combine this with the New Orleans (formerly known as Crescent City) recording and you come dangerously close to a full B$B show. Also, there is a loss of Alice's vocals in Dead Babies so it's just the music and background vocals." VG SBD stereo.

Alice Cooper - When Nightmares Turn Into Dreams [Oh Boy 1CD Torrent: 56077] live at the Forum, Los Angeles, June 17, 1975. Broadcast on The King Biscuit Flower Hour. The original silver boot "No More Teacher's Dirty Looks" makes up most of the list, the rest is from a cdr that I received in a trade and a vinyl boot called "Babies in School". The sound on the cd and cdr are pretty much equal, maybe a slight edge to the cdr. The quality on the vinyl isn't quite as good but it is still from a radio broadcast". Ex FM stereo. Most complete version of this show but still missing are Sick Things, which would have been played after I'm Eighteen, and King of the Silver Screen which came before School's Out.

Alice Cooper - Studio Jam 1979 [no label 1CD Torrent: 89286] live in San Diego 1979. "Studio Jam is a live radio show recording from a venue but I have no idea where this is from." Sourced from pre-FM 10-inch reels. Ex pre-FM stereo.

Includes these unreleased songs Everyday We Live, I'll Be There, Ivory Tower, 30 Dollar Fine all by Stills + Nash's You're Wrong Baby and Neil Young's Everybody's Alone done by CSNY. The rest are alternate takes and outtakes from Wally Heider's Studio, San Francisco from Sept to Dec 1969 and at unknown studio. The mood clearly had moved away from pop. Sound quality is very good.

CROSBY & NASH

Crosby & Nash - A Very Stony Evening: Complete Version [no label 2CD Pink Robert 382] live in Berkeley, California, Oct 15, 1971. There is an official release Another Stoney Evening that lists Oct 10, 1971 live at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles that says the bootleg is from a different show. But the songs played are the same only the sequence differs slightly. Even the "jokes" are the same. This A Very Stoney Evening first appeared as a vinyl bootleg from Trademark of Quality back in the '70s. But for the first time, the encores are included although sourced from an audience recording. Crosby & Nash - Royal Festival Hall [2CD]. An audience recording taken from Dec 4 1971 at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Material from this show included all the memorable songs from Nash's Songs For Beginners album. The final trio of songs - Ohio, Military Madness and Chicago - illustrated the protest sentiment in the early '70s.

Crosby & Nash [and Young] - Prison Benefit [1CD]. A rare appearance without Stephen Stills but with Neil Young, Prison Benefit was held at the Winterland in San Francisco on Mar 26 1972. A poor soundboard recording. The trio go through their hits. There have been unconfirmed rumours that this is due for an official release.

David Crosby - The PERRO Sessions [4CD] Here is an expanded version of the Planet Earth Rock And Roll Orchestra sessions normally traded as a 2-disc set. This set offers insight into the David Crosby sessions that resulted in the 1971 release of his first solo effort, If I Could Only Remember My Name. Extended versions of six of the album's nine songs are played here with Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh in pristine form. Said to be a milestone for West Coast rock as it avoided the excess of singer-songwriter confessions to focus on mood-building and the wordless feeling of deja vu. Crosby's girlfriend had been killed in an auto accident the previous year. Listening to the various jams with piano, violin and the twin guitars of Garcia and Jorma Kaukonen, this was some of the most original ambient music to come out of 1971. The sessions were produced by Stephen Barncard and discovered in 1991 when Atlantic were researching to compile a Crosby, Stills & Nash boxset. Read the Mojo review of the Crosby album in the Jan 1999 issue. Excellent stereo sound. For more info go to http://crosbynash.com/perro.html

The bootleg was called "Everybody Here Can Be In The Band", but on the torrent sites it was called "David Crosby Sessions" or "IICORMN - The Sessions". Later in the year, three sets of tracks started to circulate under titles: "Acoustic", "Electric" and "Residue", all in similar superior quality. THE BAND LIST

The Band - Woodstock [Homer Entertainment Network 1CD Torrent: 54360] live at Yasgur's Farm, Sunday, Aug 17, 1969 at 10:30 pm. "Long Black Veil" and "The Weight" appeared on the Woodstock 25th anniversay box set and have been removed from my copy. There was a previous version of this that came out in 2000, but the sound quality of this recording is dramatically improved. For whatever reason, Robbie Robertson's microphone being turned on the most prevelant, this was never released on the original Woodstock album nor was any of the music used in the movie. However "The Weight" was used in the "Woodstock: The Lost Performances" video released some years ago. As a result of this, some never even knew The Band played Woodstock, and for those that did few ever got to hear anything until the box set. Ex SBD stereo.
