THE BOB DYLAN LIST

1960s

Bob Dylan - Roots [Skeleton SKCD 1001 1CD piratebay 6625380] Tks 1-7 Home recording by the Gleasons in East Orange Feb-March 1961. Tks 8-14 live at Chapter Hall, Carnegie, NYC, Nov 4, 1961. VG+ home/audience mono?

The Bootleg Series [2CD]. From DylanTree comes a fine compilation of pre-recording artist Dylan when he played in the living rooms of friends who owned tape recorders and reel-to-reel tape machines. This set contains the Nov 4 Carnegie Hall show from 1961, the Bonnie Beacher tapes from Dec 22, 1961, and the Leeds Demos from Feb 1962. Sound quality is excellent. We designed the cover for our copy for the heck of it.The Minnesota Tapes (3CD May-December 1961 home recordings)

Bob Dylan - Early Dylan [DylanTree 2CD] From DylanTree comes a fine compilation of pre-recording artist Dylan when he played in the living rooms of friends who owned tape recorders and reel-to-reel tape machines. This set contains the Nov 4 Carnegie Hall show from 1961, the Bonnie Beacher tapes from Dec 22, 1961, and the Leeds Demos from Feb 1962. Sound quality is excellent. This is reMastered version of the above. See notes below:

"This is a gorgeous remastering of the Dylantree Early Dylan set. As you may know, the dylantree version was flawed with "digital fuzz" in many places, particularly on the Beacher tapes sections. The fuzz is gone on the bprm. Other annoying extraneous noises have been removed, as well as overlong dead spaces between tracks. No EQ changes have been made to the original sound of the recordings. Levels have been normalized to match up the varying sources. The overall effect is to turn the Dylantree product into a two disc WOW! rather than a choppy collection of moldy old stuff. It's never sounded better."

"Steve Wilkison has done a wonderful job with this set. I consider it well worth getting, even if you have the original dylantree set. Here is an additional comment from Steve: 'I spent the better part of two days remastering the "Early Dylan" set because it literally contained well over 1,000 separate digital glitches'. Truly a labor of love."

Acoustic Troubadour (Carnegie Chapter Hall Nov 4 1961 and Concert for Bangladesh and Blood on the Tracks outtakes)

Bob Dylan - Carnegie Chapter Hall 1961 [BDA 1CD demonoid 2865564, 2872750] live in New York, November 4, 1961. "The first seven songs from this performance came into circulation some years ago (see DylanTree's share of Early Dylan). Five more songs appeared in December 2004 and a further two turned up in May 2008. It is generally believed that no other songs from this earliest of Dylan performances are in existence anywhere." The young Bob Dylan performed a total of 22 songs at Carnegie Chapter Hall. THIS IS LOSSY. AS FAR AS WE KNOW, NONE OF THIS HAS BEEN AVAILABLE IN LOSSLESS FORMAT. Ex SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan - Belafonte Midnight Special Session Feb 2, 1962 [no label 1CD hungercity 1012] Harry Belafonte's sessions for the song Midnight Special (takes 1-20) with Dylan on harmonica at Webster Hall, NYC, Feb 1962. The song was released on Harry Belafonte's Midnight Special RCA LP in March 1962. But there is a dispute of when the song was recorded either Dec 1961 or May 1961 or Feb 1962. Ex SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan - Columbia Studio A 1962 [no label 1CD hungercity 2379] Sessions at Columbia Studio A, New York, Dec 6, 1962. Dylan recordings Hero Blues, Whatcha Gonna Do?, Oxford Town, I Shall Be Free and take 1 of A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. "When I first received "For Sale Or Just On The Shelf" as a vine on Dylantree I noticed that the Dec. 06 1962 Session was running slow and also realised I had a Stereo copy. I re-edited the complete disc and inserted my superior source.

"Unfortunately the only way I could edit the disc was to copy to Minidisc and then to Pioneer Standalone CD Recorder. I then sent the disc to a contact in the U.S. and he was so pleased with the result he Re-vined the disc.

"I don't know which version of "For Sale Or Just On The Shelf" circulates now but if it is my upgrade then Vol. 1, Disc 2 is from Minidisc source. I believe the Hollow Horn disc was a clone of "For Sale Or Just On The Shelf" so that too could be from this source. This Torrent represents the first time this Session has been Torrented (by me) direct from Tape to Hard Drive fully lossless." Ex SBD stereo. Possibly first time this version is circulated LOSSLESS.

Tracks 7-12 Second show broadcast June 19, 1965. "Recorded on 15th & 26th June 1965, in Hull, Yorkshire, U.K. using a KB domestic 1/4in. recorder with a BSR tape deck, running at a speed of 3.75ips via a line connection to Rediffusion wired system junction box. The recording is in Mono. This tape, while in great quality, came in the wrong speed and needed some work before it was listenable. Volume, Speed & pitch corrected in London, U.K. 10th - 12th September 2005 using CoolEdit Pro 2.0. Some additional remastering including fade-in, fade-outs at start & end of disc were done. Some additional remastering including fade-in, fade-outs at start & end of disc were done. Noise or hiss reduction has not been performed, in order to best preserve the atmosphere and feel of the original tape which this can sometimes take away."

MonicasDude - "Whether it's an "upgrade" is a matter of taste. It is a direct line recording, where earlier versions had been recorded "over the air" off TV speakers, and that is, of course, a big plus. The variable speed/pitch, however, is a big minus, and while folks have worked really hard to clean this up, the outcome hasn't been 100% successful. Not that you could fairly expect 100% success on a job like that; I'm not at all saying the cleanup was done badly." VG to Ex- FM mono.

Highway 61 Revisted Again (acetates from 1965)

Bob Dylan - Desolation Row, 50th Anniversary Compilation Vol 1 (no label 4CDs dime 537652) 1 song, 50 years, 101 live versions. Bob Dylan recorded Desolation Row in Studio A of Columbia Recording Studio in New York City at sessions for his Highway 61 Revisited album. Various takes were recorded on July 30, 1965 then on August 2 and August 4, 1965 with two takes from this final session being edited together to form the album version. Bob performed Desolation Row live for the first time on August 28, 1965 at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in New York City. Desolation Row was then officially released on August 30, 1965 as the final track on Highway 61 Revisited.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Desolation Row, I have created a compilation of 101 live versions of this song. 'Was that some kind of joke?' you may ask. It started as a simple request, 'Can you just put together some of the best versions?' The project then began innocently with an initial thought of maybe compiling one version from each year it was performed live or maybe even 50 different versions. But it quickly grew into this 13 disc set. This torrent is part 1 of 3 - discs 5 to 13 will follow over the next week. VG to Ex SBD/FM/AUD stereo and mono. DATA FILE ONLY

I had a friend with contacts to the [ICA] cinema and asked if he would inquire about the music. Those cassette masters have long been stored in a box along with two reel to reels marked "Seattle 2/9/74 aft and eve." I long presumed the reels to be safety copies of SG's cassette masters. But when going through other tapes in the box, I decided to thread up the reels just to make sure, and, low and behold, the reels were not copies but instead alternate and superior recordings." - BK for JEMS. "By an unfortunate error I included the wrong 'Meet Me in the Morning' on my previous torrent. I actually included the one off the acetate, as I was listening for mix / overdub changes and finished up mislabeling it. It is the same take as the Test pressing (T6) and not from the Bootleg Series 1-3 take (T4 recorded 19 September 74). The second track is 'Meet Me in the Morning' - b side to single 38-540533. "This is one of those times where the filler is as good as the main show: there are three outstanding filler tracks included on this to round out disc 2: Hurricane, Oh Sister, and Simple Twist Of Fate, which are from a 1975-12-13 FM simulcast of the television show "The World of John Hammond." The DAT was described to me as coming from 1st generation cassette (?) copies. "Our third installment is from the final performance of Dylan's seven-night residency at the Universal Amphitheater in June 1978 (imagine playing a 27-30 song set for seven consecutive nights without a day off). Once again, the recording is not quite complete. Millard's notes state, "Missed first song and most of second song." In truth he missed the first three songs (the show-opening "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," "Love Her With a Feeling" and "Baby Stop Crying") before he gets his trusty Nakamichi 550 up and running during "Mr Tambourine Man." Bob Dylan - Los Angeles 1978, The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes Vol Four, the alternate "Recording B" master (Mike Millard first gen via JEMS, 2CD dime 507740) live at the Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, CA; June 7, 1978.

"Incredibly, our fourth installment is an alternative SECOND Millard recording from the final performance of Dylan's seven-night residency at the Universal Amphitheater in June 1978. That's right, the same performance as Volume 3 of our series, but a different recording made by Millard with a completely different rig. In addition to his familiar AKG 451E mics (CK-1 capsules) > Nakamichi 550 set up, Millard ran a pair of Nakamichi CM-50 microphones into a Uher CR-240 cassette recorder. We believe this is the first verified example of Millard recording on different gear and he uses the same set up for future shows in our series."

"This recording also marks the first time in the run that Mike was able to capture the show from the very start, the instrumental version of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." So we get the beginning of the show, but not the full encore, as the last song of the night, "The Times They Are A-Changin'," is omitted. (Note: It can be found on the Vol. Three recording of the same performance.)

"The question you are probably asking yourself right about now is: OK, that's all interesting minutiae, but which recording is better? I would give the nod to this one, which sounds just a tad sharper, clearer and fuller." - BK for JEMS. The Band line up 1978 tour: Bob Dylan (vocal & guitar), Billy Cross (lead guitar), Alan Pasqua (keyboards), Steven Soles (rhythm guitar, backup vocals), David Mansfield (violin & mandolin), Steve Douglas (horns), Jerry Scheff (bass), Bobbye Hall (percussion), Ian Wallace (drums), Helena Springs, (background vocals), Jo Ann Harris,(background vocals) and Carolyn Dennis (background vocals). "Firstly, Money Blues is the only "new to circulation" item here. It has the same Dylan/Levy lyric that appears in the "Lyrics" book. However, it is certainly *not* Bob Dylan singing it. No idea who it is. It is a cover version and so should not be here on a set called "Desire Sessions" unless the intention is to deceive. Maybe it is some kind of joke??

There are 2 other inclusions on this set that indicate some intent to deceive - d01t10 Oh Sister is a slowed down version of d01t07 I think. Listen to the violin on the second version - it is the only uncomfortable listen here. Also, the versions of Rita Mae deserve comment - d01t01 is identical to the outtake that appears on The Genuine Bootleg Series The Third One Now - d02t18 length 3:18 - and the other two versions are both taken from the Biograph version.

The difference between them is that the first version on CD 2 (t04) has a rather clumsy early fade introduced. A bit of mischief I think. Sadly, there is no reason to believe that whoever remastered these recordings had access to any uncirculated Bob Dylan material. However, they have done a very good job of sonic enhancement. It's just a shame they don't seem to want to provide notes and information. I would like to know how they do it! Maybe a combination of access to the quadrophonic Desire mix and the SACDs propensity to drop vocal tracks when you change the settings? Who knows? Anybody else got any thoughts?

Oh, one other point of interest - the d02t03 Hurricane is the original version that was canned after the intervention of Columbia's lawyers. It was the line about "robbing the Bodies" that caused concern. Just as well they changed it as Dylan got Bello and Bradley mixed up too!" - Artery. Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte [2CD]. A live bootleg taken from the Charlotte Coliseum show on Dec 10, 1978. This band had Elvis' bass player Jerry Sheff. The '78 shows signalled the start of the Neverending Tours. Yup, 60-year-old Bob Dylan is still playing live.

Bob Dylan - Charlotte 1978 UPGRADE (LB-4625 2CD dime 337359) live at Charlotte Coliseum, Charlotte, North Carolina, December 10 1978. "Excellent recording - sensational performance - one of the best Dylan recordings/concerts I know....one of the best by any artist, actually..!" Source is Taper RS' master tape. "Of course, my Charlotte recording has been commercially booted (and Knoxville 2/5 too), but the quality of the raw (undoctored) transfers tends to beat the bootleg discs by quite a ways. I recently did a new transfer (via improved equipment & connections) to CDr from the original Charlotte Maxell cassettes which are still in surprisingly good condition, and that one sounds best ever." Bob Dylan - Santa Monica 1979, The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes Vol Five (Mike Millard first gen via JEMS, 2CD dime 510488) live at the Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA, November 18, 1979. JEMS 2014 Transfer: first-generation reel copy (3-3/4 IPS) made by Mike Millard for SG. "This concert in Santa Monica was the first show that followed the Warfield run and opening night of four in the Los Angeles area. Dylan didn't perform a single song from his back catalog, instead filling the set with all eight songs from Slow Train Coming; another seven from its companion, Saved, which would be released the following year; the still unreleased "Blessed Be the Name"; plus several gospel numbers performed by the show's back-up singers: Regina Havis, Helena Springs and Mona Lisa Young. To our ears, Millard nails it this night. As usual, he's close to the PA with a quiet crowd around him, and the AKGs + Uher yield a great pull in his capable hands. It is a pleasure to listen to." - BK for JEMS. Probable lineup: Bob Dylan (guitar, piano, harmonica, vocals), Spooner Oldham (keyboards, vocals), Terry Young (keyboards, vocals), Fred Tackett (guitar), Tim Drummond (bass), Jim Keltner (drums), Regina Havis (vocals), Helena Springs (vocals), and Mona Lisa Young (vocals). Bob Dylan - Santa Monica 1979, The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes Vol Seven (Mike Millard first gen via JEMS, 2CD dime 516579) live at the Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA; November 19, 1979. CD1 from reel source. CD2 from cassette source. Transfers made in 2014. "JEMS is pleased to release the seventh (six Dylan, one Springsteen) in a series of recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin in and around LA circa 1975-77. Installment No. 7 is, sad to say, the last of the Dylan recordings made by Millard and given to SG of JEMS. It is the second of a four-night run at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in the midst of the vibrant Gospel Tour and a performance every bit as potent as the first show, sharing the identical set list (as did the entire tour), but with even more on-stage testifying from Bob. It is also another admirable example of great work from Millard. Based on the sound, he is in a very similar seat to night one, close to the PA with a quiet crowd around him, and the AKGs + Uher yield a mighty impressive pull.

"You'll note that this recording comes from two different tape sources, one reel to reel the other cassette. All told, Millard sent SG a box containing four reels and ten cassettes, and the first 50 or so minutes of the 11/19 show was used to fill out side two of the reel containing the full 11/18/79 recording. But Millard also dubbed a copy of the complete 11/19 Dylan set on cassette, though on this night it seems he did not record the opening songs by the back-up singers, so the both the reel and cassette copies of the show start with "Gotta Serve Somebody". - BK for JEMS. Bob Dylan - Complete Infidels Sessions [no label 7CD] fan compiled set taken from Surviving In The Ruthless World; Bob Dylan & Mark Knopfler - The Complete Sessions; Rough Cuts; work tapes, first Infidels outtakes tape and some unknown tapes. The story goes that Dylan recorded Infidels quickly and had a setlist. After a while, he changed his mind and removed some songs and reordered the setlist. Meanwhile, apparently for the first time, he went back in to dub in new vocal parts and changed some lyrics. Dylan had always recorded live in the studio before. Some rock writers have said the first recording of Infidels was more passionate, hence the interest in these sessions. Overall Ex sound quality.

"This issue corrects this set of Dylan rarities, all but two of which ran slightly fast or slow, and all of which was out of phase. On the original CDs, the track markers were placed before the previous track ended or after the next one had already started, and there were abrupt starts and stops with no silences between tracks. These have been fixed. One track, (Seems Like A) Freeze Out, sped up gradually on its way to the end. This has had its pitch straightened out here. This set is reputed to contain the best-sounding iterations of this Dylan material. We are pleased to be able to present it in improved quality. No noise reduction or EQ was used. Only the playback speed, phase and levels have been altered." Mostly Ex SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan with The Rolling Thunder Revue - Bootleg Series Vol. 5 Live 1975 Companion Fan Compilation (A Tree With Routs 1CD dime 489184) This set has been created by Chris Fries with the help of Les Kokay. It is a compilation of every song that Dylan played on the 1975 fall tour not included on the official release. Also included is the one time duet with Joan Baez on "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll." This set is very nicely done. Ex SBD? stereo. DATA FILE ONLY

Bob Dylan - The Mystery Tape [no label 1CD pink robert 642] "In 1992, the Mystery Tape emerged as a nice little item and quite a few tracks were totally new to collectors. Possibly this tape was put together for the purposes of copywriting this material." Contains tracks from early '60s to Oh Mercy period. Ex SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan - The Fantasy Acetate [no label 1CD pink robert 643] Tracks 1, 4 & 9 - Carnegie Hall, New York, October 26, 1963; Tracks 2 & 6 - Philharmonic Hall, New York, October 31, 1964; Track 3 - Town Hall, New York, April 22, 1963; Tracks 5 & 8 - Columbia Studios, New York; Tracks 7 & 10 - Royal Festival Hall, London, May 17, 1964.

"Keith Venturoni has been in touch with Fantasy Records, and confirmed that the tape from which this acetate was made came from Ralph Gleason, who was a co-owner of Fantasy at the time. The acetate was made from the tape between 1972-80 by David Turner, Fantasy's then chief engineer (this may have been during the period when Bob wasn't signed to Columbia). Fantasy think they still have the tape in the vaults, along with that of a concert by Bob at Berkeley Community Theater (which is likely to be 4 Dec 1965, not 22 Feb 1964 as I originally speculated).

This stereo acetate contains early 1960s tracks from Bob, four of which have appeared on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, and The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964. There are six rarities - three tracks that appeared on the withdrawn 1964 Columbia album Bob Dylan In Concert, one studio track that appeared on a Columbia acetate, and two tracks that are otherwise unreleased.

The Gleason connection is easy on this. Gleason was commissioned by Columbia to write the sleeve-notes for In Concert (undoubtedly at Dylan's request). So, if In Concert was reconfigured, Gleason would obviously have needed to revise those sleeve notes (seemingly now lost) hence the need for another acetate." Ex SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan - "Complete BobDylan.com" Various Dates And Venues 1961-2004 (no label 8 CDs hungercity 2667)  All tracks at one time have been freely available at the official Dylan site Bob Dylan.com. "This contains ALL the Bob Dylan tracks that have appeared on BobDylan.com. These tracks have all been obtained directly with XFileGet / Ra2Wav and more recently using Total Recorder. None of these tracks have been lifted from the Bootlegs 'From the Vaults Vol 1 or 2' or 'BobDylan.com Masters', on which the recordings have been re-edited to make the intros overlap. Some tracks have occured more than once, and I have retained these 'errors' for the sake of completeness, except in the case of the large 60th Birthday repost, which I have ignored, as there was nothing new. Similiarly I have ignored the two videos and the Custom-Mix CDs. Many of these tracks are available elsewhere in better quality. The official released tracks are all available in 'lossless' format. I believe that all the audience recordings, shown as (A), have also circulated from the source tapes in 'lossless' format. Never-the-less this set documents ALL 105 tracks in best possible quality." - jetpilot, 2008. VG+ to Ex SBD/AUD stereo/mono. DATA FILE ONLY
