THE BOB DYLAN LIST

1960s

The Bootleg Series [2CD]. From DylanTree comes a fine compilation of pre-recording artist Dylan when he played in the living rooms of friends who owned tape recorders and reel-to-reel tape machines. This set contains the Nov 4 Carnegie Hall show from 1961, the Bonnie Beacher tapes from Dec 22, 1961, and the Leeds Demos from Feb 1962. Sound quality is excellent. We designed the cover for our copy for the heck of it.The Minnesota Tapes (3CD May-December 1961 home recordings)

Bob Dylan - Early Dylan [DylanTree 2CD] From DylanTree comes a fine compilation of pre-recording artist Dylan when he played in the living rooms of friends who owned tape recorders and reel-to-reel tape machines. This set contains the Nov 4 Carnegie Hall show from 1961, the Bonnie Beacher tapes from Dec 22, 1961, and the Leeds Demos from Feb 1962. Sound quality is excellent. This is reMastered version of the above. See notes below:

"This is a gorgeous remastering of the Dylantree Early Dylan set. As you may know, the dylantree version was flawed with "digital fuzz" in many places, particularly on the Beacher tapes sections. The fuzz is gone on the bprm. Other annoying extraneous noises have been removed, as well as overlong dead spaces between tracks. No EQ changes have been made to the original sound of the recordings. Levels have been normalized to match up the varying sources. The overall effect is to turn the Dylantree product into a two disc WOW! rather than a choppy collection of moldy old stuff. It's never sounded better."

"Steve Wilkison has done a wonderful job with this set. I consider it well worth getting, even if you have the original dylantree set. Here is an additional comment from Steve: 'I spent the better part of two days remastering the "Early Dylan" set because it literally contained well over 1,000 separate digital glitches'. Truly a labor of love."

Dylan recordings Hero Blues, Whatcha Gonna Do?, Oxford Town, I Shall Be Free and take 1 of A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. "When I first received "For Sale Or Just On The Shelf" as a vine on Dylantree I noticed that the Dec. 06 1962 Session was running slow and also realised I had a Stereo copy. I re-edited the complete disc and inserted my superior source.

"Unfortunately the only way I could edit the disc was to copy to Minidisc and then to Pioneer Standalone CD Recorder. I then sent the disc to a contact in the U.S. and he was so pleased with the result he Re-vined the disc.

"I don't know which version of "For Sale Or Just On The Shelf" circulates now but if it is my upgrade then Vol. 1, Disc 2 is from Minidisc source. I believe the Hollow Horn disc was a clone of "For Sale Or Just On The Shelf" so that too could be from this source. This Torrent represents the first time this Session has been Torrented (by me) direct from Tape to Hard Drive fully lossless." Ex SBD stereo. Possibly first time this version is circulated LOSSLESS.

"Recorded on 15th & 26th June 1965, in Hull, Yorkshire, U.K. using a KB domestic 1/4in. recorder with a BSR tape deck, running at a speed of 3.75ips via a line connection to Rediffusion wired system junction box. The recording is in Mono. This tape, while in great quality, came in the wrong speed and needed some work before it was listenable. Volume, Speed & pitch corrected in London, U.K. 10th - 12th September 2005 using CoolEdit Pro 2.0. Some additional remastering including fade-in, fade-outs at start & end of disc were done. "This tape, while in great quality, came in the wrong speed and needed some work before it was listenable. Volume, speed & pitch corrected in London, Sept 10-12 2005 using CoolEdit Pro 2.0. Some additional remastering including fade-in, fade-outs at start & end of disc were done. Noise or hiss reduction has not been performed, in order to best preserve the atmosphere and feel of the original tape which this can sometimes take away."

MonicasDude - "Whether it's an "upgrade" is a matter of taste. It is a direct line recording, where earlier versions had been recorded "over the air" off TV speakers, and that is, of course, a big plus. The variable speed/pitch, however, is a big minus, and while folks have worked really hard to clean this up, the outcome hasn't been 100% successful. Not that you could fairly expect 100% success on a job like that; I'm not at all saying the cleanup was done badly." VG to Ex- FM mono.

Weberman on January 6, and January 9, 1971. The telephone conversations were soon after released to the public as a Broadside/ Folkways LP entitled "Bob Dylan vs. A.J. Weberman." The LP was soon pulled from the shelves by the legal clout of CBS. It has since become a high dollar collectible. This particular recording is taken from the super clean LP bootleg 'Grudge Match', which was directly recorded from a pristine 'official' LP." Bob Dylan & Rolling Thunder Review - Mobile, Alabama 1976 [LB61 3CD Torrent: 147323] live at Expo Hall, Municipal Auditorium, Mobile, Alabama, April 29, 1976, Evening show. This is concert #11 of the 2nd tour in 1976. "LB-61 from Bob Meyer's audience master collection, complete show, very good sound." Olav66. Lineup: Bob Dylan (guitar & vocal), Scarlet Rivera (violin), T-bone J. Henry Burnette (guitar & piano), Steven Soles (guitar), Mick Ronson (guitar), Bobby Neuwirth (guitar & vocal), Roger McGuinn (guitar & vocal), David Mansfield (steel guitar, mandolin, violin & dobro), Rob Stoner (bass), Howie Wyeth (drums), Gary Burke (congas). This has been released on the bootleg Acoustic Thunder [Wild Wolf]. But this version is from the audience master tape. VG+ to Ex- AUD mono.

"This is one of those times where the filler is as good as the main show: there are three outstanding filler tracks included on this to round out disc 2: Hurricane, Oh Sister, and Simple Twist Of Fate, which are from a 1975-12-13 FM simulcast of the television show "The World of John Hammond." The fidelity on these is incredible, and Dylan puts in a typical outstanding mid-70s performance." Ex SBD stereo. Some think the speed needs fixing but not sure if too fast or too slow?

Bob Dylan - The Warehouse 1976: UPGRADE [no label 3CD torrent 174408] Live at The Warehouse, New Orleans, May 3, 1976 - Evening Show. This is from a non-bootleg source and is an UPGRADE. Notes: "There is some speculation about this being the evening show, please see Les Kokay's "Songs Of The Underground" p.106-110. This is a new transfer and is not identical to LB-0509. The DAT was described to me as coming from 1st generation cassette (?) copies. As you can never be sure with Dylan tapes of that vintage, especially SBDs, I decided to present the linage the way I did and add this caveat. I did not harm the sound of the source tape in any way other than trying to pitch correct the show." Ex- SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan - Friends And Other Strangers [The Soundboard Master Tape TSMT 001/002 2CD] live at The Warehouse, New Orleans, Louisana, May 3, 1976, evening show. "Friends And Other Strangers on the TSMT label utilize a copy of the master soundboard recording. The sound quality on this is a considerable improvement over all previous release and can be considered definitive." All of Dylan's performances are here. Isis is cut as in all other versions. This is a new 2008 bootleg. Ex- SBD stereo.

The Rundown Rehearsal Tapes [4CD]. This bootleg has also been treed for fans who couldn't or wouldn't buy bootlegs. Dylan was preparing to go on tour with Street Legal about to be released. The band play through his hits and clearly he is trying to accommodate the new players and girl chorus as well as to update his sound, hence fresh tempos like reggae . These sessions stretched from Dec 1977 to Apr 1978. Also included are three live recordings made from the tour at the end of 1978. Best sound quality of this hard-to-find sessions.

Dominique Roques states in "The Great White Answers" that it is interesting the tape used for these discs never circulated." A vinyl rip by JTT Sept 2008. Ex- AUD stereo. Incomplete show.

Bob Dylan - "Earls Court" [no label 1CD dime 216548] live in London, England, June 20th 1978. "This one is a classic. It was reviewed in Melody Maker and NME as though it was an official release. I read the review on a Thursday and on Saturday my local record shop had it in their racks, £5, and worth every penny, hats off to the Bootleggers. The copy torrented here is the original UK pressing which according to "Great White Answers" was in fact the first European/UK bootleg." A JTT vinyl rip Sept 2008. Ex- AUD stereo. TT: 51.36

Bob Dylan - Desire Sessions Remastered [Pink Robert 451, 2CD] CD1 Tks 1-4 recorded July 14, 28, 29 1978. Tks 8-11 July 30, 31 1978. CD2 Tks 1-6 July 30, 31 1978. Tk 7 Oct 24, 1978. "Firstly, Money Blues is the only "new to circulation" item here. It has the same Dylan/Levy lyric that appears in the "Lyrics" book. However, it is certainly *not* Bob Dylan singing it. No idea who it is. It is a cover version and so should not be here on a set called "Desire Sessions" unless the intention is to deceive. Maybe it is some kind of joke??

There are 2 other inclusions on this set that indicate some intent to deceive - d01t10 Oh Sister is a slowed down version of d01t07 I think. Listen to the violin on the second version - it is the only uncomfortable listen here. Also, the versions of Rita Mae deserve comment - d01t01 is identical to the outtake that appears on The Genuine Bootleg Series The Third One Now - d02t18 length 3:18 - and the other two versions are both taken from the Biograph version.

The difference between them is that the first version on CD 2 (t04) has a rather clumsy early fade introduced. A bit of mischief I think. Sadly, there is no reason to believe that whoever remastered these recordings had access to any uncirculated Bob Dylan material. However, they have done a very good job of sonic enhancement. It's just a shame they don't seem to want to provide notes and information. I would like to know how they do it! Maybe a combination of access to the quadrophonic Desire mix and the SACDs propensity to drop vocal tracks when you change the settings? Who knows? Anybody else got any thoughts?

Oh, one other point of interest - the d02t03 Hurricane is the original version that was canned after the intervention of Columbia's lawyers. It was the line about "robbing the Bodies" that caused concern. Just as well they changed it as Dylan got Bello and Bradley mixed up too!" - Artery. This is an excellent remaster but the source seems to be acetate. Ex SBD stereo. Clicks and pops here and there. Minor.

Bob Dylan - Toronto 1978 [no label 2CD Torrent: 79140] live in Toronto, Oct 12, 1978. "For years, the Toronto '78 show has mainly been circulated in the form of the commercial bootleg I Was Young When I Left Home, which plays noticeably too fast. Just recently, however, as part of the outstanding Project '78 now underway, a new transfer from the master turned up, apparently obtained directly from the taper himself." VG+ AUD stereo.

Bob Dylan - Complete Infidels Sessions [no label 7CD] fan compiled set taken from Surviving In The Ruthless World; Bob Dylan & Mark Knopfler - The Complete Sessions; Rough Cuts; work tapes, first Infidels outtakes tape and some unknown tapes. The story goes that Dylan recorded Infidels quickly and had a setlist. After a while, he changed his mind and removed some songs and reordered the setlist. Meanwhile, apparently for the first time, he went back in to dub in new vocal parts and changed some lyrics. Dylan had always recorded live in the studio before. Some rock writers have said the first recording of Infidels was more passionate, hence the interest in these sessions. Overall Ex sound quality.

2000

Glasgow [2CD]. A bootleg from Dylan's acclaimed UK tour in 2000. This one was held on Sept 17, 2000 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. It's almost impossible to find soundboard recordings of his 2000 shows. But with the advance of recording technology, these audience recordings using superior mics and either DAT or minidisc recorders are in excellent shape. The live ambience and deep bass sounds are all perfectly captured. The tradeoff is a monoish sound.

Bob Dylan - The Mystery Tape [no label 1CD pink robert 642] "In 1992, the Mystery Tape emerged as a nice little item and quite a few tracks were totally new to collectors. Possibly this tape was put together for the purposes of copywriting this material." Contains tracks from early '60s to Oh Mercy period. Ex SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan - The Fantasy Acetate [no label 1CD pink robert 643] Tracks 1, 4 & 9 - Carnegie Hall, New York, October 26, 1963; Tracks 2 & 6 - Philharmonic Hall, New York, October 31, 1964; Track 3 - Town Hall, New York, April 22, 1963; Tracks 5 & 8 - Columbia Studios, New York; Tracks 7 & 10 - Royal Festival Hall, London, May 17, 1964.

"Keith Venturoni has been in touch with Fantasy Records, and confirmed that the tape from which this acetate was made came from Ralph Gleason, who was a co-owner of Fantasy at the time. The acetate was made from the tape between 1972-80 by David Turner, Fantasy's then chief engineer (this may have been during the period when Bob wasn't signed to Columbia). Fantasy think they still have the tape in the vaults, along with that of a concert by Bob at Berkeley Community Theater (which is likely to be 4 Dec 1965, not 22 Feb 1964 as I originally speculated).

This stereo acetate contains early 1960s tracks from Bob, four of which have appeared on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, and The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964. There are six rarities - three tracks that appeared on the withdrawn 1964 Columbia album Bob Dylan In Concert, one studio track that appeared on a Columbia acetate, and two tracks that are otherwise unreleased.

The Gleason connection is easy on this. Gleason was commissioned by Columbia to write the sleeve-notes for In Concert (undoubtedly at Dylan's request). So, if In Concert was reconfigured, Gleason would obviously have needed to revise those sleeve notes (seemingly now lost) hence the need for another acetate." Ex SBD stereo.
