JEMS Transfer: very likely 2nd generation reel to reel tapes. "Installment No. 8 is an upgrade to another soundboard classic: the Electric Ballroom in Atlanta, August 23, 1975. As explained in detail here (http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=36408), the ER Archive tapes of this show were copied from Ed Sciaky's reels in the late '70s. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Austin, Texas 1975: UPGRADE from ER Archives Vol. 11 via JEMS (JEMS 2CD dime 504155) live at Municipal Auditorium, Austin, TX, September 12, 1975. JEMS 2014 Transfer: very likely 2nd generation reel to reel tapes. Installment 11 is an upgrade to another Born to Run tour soundboard gem: Municipal Auditorium, Austin, TX, September 12, 1975. "To our ears it is an upgrade, in this case sharper and tighter, especially in the high-end, compared to extant sources like the Whoop Cat's Austin 1975 bootleg CD." "The mix is a bit vocal heavy, expected given a raw board feed in a relatively small venue, but otherwise quite appealing." - BK for JEMS. mjk5510 processing notes: This is a tremendous raw transfer of this show, the source tape is sharp and crisp with an excellent stereo spectrum. There were a number of right channel, left channel volume fluctuations and dips that needed to be balanced and I was able to correct each instance seamlessly so they are no longer noticeable to the listener. It was a pleasure to work on a 1970's soundboard of this caliber absent the usual severe hiss when balancing and smoothing. This show should now rightfully take its place near the top of an incredibly exciting time during the heady early period of a 40+ year career. Bruce Springsteen - Thank You Houston [Parrot 2CD] Live at Music Hall, Houston, Sept 13 1975 on Born To Run tour. Ex- SBD. This version includes the two song encore.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - So Dark Tonight, Houston 1975: ER Archives Vol. 9 via JEMS [JEMS master 2CD dime 483802] Live at Music Hall, Houston, Texas, Sept 13 1975 on Born To Run tour. From 2nd generation (?) reel to reel master. "In preparing Houston for release, I found myself asking, "Why isn't this show more beloved?" It is the second extant soundboard recording after Atlanta 8/23/75 (ER Archive Vol. 8), and the three weeks that followed included the tour's first two-week break. As such, the band is both recharged and rehearsed. Comparing sets between ATL and HOU we see the addition of three songs from Born to Run--"Tenth Avenue Freeze-out," "Thunder Road" and "Jungleland"--putting more emphasis on the new album, though the show opens in the past with a lovely "Incident on 57th Street," as good as any we have from board sources on the '75 tour. Perhaps its the quality of ER's reels, but I had never previously noted that someone sings along with Springsteen for several lines in "Incident," starting with the lyric "With bruised arms and broken rhythm." But who?

"The show ends as appealingly as it begins, as a raucous crowd is clearly lifting Bruce's spirits, leading to a rollicking version of "Carol" straight into "Lucille." The band is them summoned back for "Twist and Shout." In between those sublime bookends is the first known performance of Manfred Mann's "Pretty Flamingo," complete with the story of the girl walking by Bruce's porch that would be retold all the way through The River tour, when it was part of "I Wanna Merry You", "Jungleland" is strong; "Kitty" too.

"This is one of the clearer '75 board tapes, and though it is wanting for more guitar in the mix at times, the rest of the band could not sound closer." - BK. Ex- SBD stereo. JEMS 2014 transfer. DATA FILE ONLY

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Iowa City 1975, Ed Sciaky Reels (no label 2CD dime 494217) live at Hancher Auditorium, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, Sept 26, 1975. There were a couple of cuts here and there on Ed's reels. rockcat's notes: "Sometime around 1993-94, Ed Sciaky loaned his reels to me. Unfortunately, Ed was notorious for "preserving" these priceless masters on cheap Shamrock tape(!) and by 1993, his reels were already drying out and shedding oxide. I very carefully transferred them to DAT. I previously had cassette copies of many of Ed's reels that had been transferred a year earlier by another of Ed's friends. When I was transferring the reels myself, I was shocked to discover several additional songs! It seems that Ed's other friend refused to transfer songs if as little as a few seconds (or more) were missing. Unfortunately, many of those transfers made it into circulation. As previously mentioned, those transfers were made to analog cassette. This transfer was made direct to DAT. This is the first time that this particular transfer is being put into wide circulation. There may be other equally complete transfers of Ed's reels in circulation, but they were made years later when the reels had deteriorated much more. When I transferred the reels, they were already showing signs of age. This is a raw transfer with no additional fixes or processing. I still think it sounds better than any other copies in circulation." Ex SBD stereo. TT: 132:21m. Transfer from reels made May 31, 2014. Shared by rockcat June 2014. DATA FILE ONLY

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band  - Somebody Tried to Blow Us Up Tonight: ER Archives via JEMS 2013 [ER Archives 3CD jungleland 36408] live at Uptown Theater, Milwaukee, WI, October 2, 1975. CD1 is an audience recording. CD2 + 3 are from soundboard. "Welcome back to the sixth in a series of releases from the ER Archives, the collection of an active '70s taper and trader who stepped away from collecting, leaving his tapes pretty much dormant until now... Installment No. 6 is an upgrade to a soundboard classic: The Bomb Scare Show, Uptown Theater, Milwaukee, WI, October 2, 1975." This comes from WMMR DJ Ed Sciaky's tapes. "Milwaukee has always been one of the better boards, but the clarity here, both in the high and low end, is striking. Compared to the previous best circulating copy, the new Milwaukee board transfer is lush and full, brighter and deeper in a way the old one never was. It has a true 'you are there' quality." The audience tape: "Unfortunately the audience portion of the show is still crappy, but this copy should be better than you've heard it before. The start of the show isn't cut as it is on other copies, and while it remains a poor recording, you can still make out what's going on." Ex SBD stereo for CDs2 and 3. Poor AUD stereo? for CD1. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band featuring the Miami Horns - Fox Theatre, Nothing to Lose: The 1977 Tour Revisited Vol. Two "Official Audience Recording" (JEMS Archive 2CD dime 519104) live at Fox Theatre, St Louis, MO, February 28, 1977. Recorded from the stage by Springsteen's tour crew plus second audience source for Complete Show. "Our second installment is a cracking set from St Louis that despite featuring but 13 songs, still clocks in at close to two hours, thanks in part to long/epic versions of "It's My Life," "Mona > She's the One," "Rosalita" and a particularly gripping "Backstreets," played here at a much slower pace than you're used to (as is "Tenth Avenue"), perhaps because it is so heavy with emotion. Despite Bruce's mumbled apology "sorry we're late," the show gets off to a lively start with "Night" and quite brilliant reading of "Rendezvous." The tour's unique original song, "Action in the Streets" (never played again with the E Street Band after this tour) is a highlight every single night and the same can be said for all the songs that feature the Miami Horns. You will likely find the sound quality here to be a step up from Richfield/Vol. One. It is closer and fuller, with Garry W. Tallent well represented in the mix. If there's any complaint about the sound quality its that Bruce's vocals at some of the loudest peaks of the show ("Thunder Road," "She's the One" and "Born to Run") seems to be breaking up or distorting a bit in the PA, but you might not have noticed that if I hadn't pointed it out." - BK for JEMS. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band featuring the Miami Horns - Milwaukee Auditorium, Nothing to Lose: The 1977 Tour Revisited Vol. Three "Official Audience Recording" (JEMS Archive 2CD dime 520928) live at Milwaukee Auditorium, Milwaukee, WI, February 22, 1977. "The set list here is identical to our last volume, St. Louis, February 28, 1977, but we don't think you'll mind. The highlights are much the same, with strong and long versions of "Mona > She's the One" and "Backstreets." Like St. Louis, the latter and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out" are taken at a slower pace. The show ends with particularly committed version of "Quarter to Three." Of the so-called "official audience tapes," Milwaukee is the most widely known, thanks to a mid-90s bootleg CD Action in the Streets. More commonly circulated these days is a version called The Return to Bombscare Arena, which is remastered from the aforementioned bootleg. We think you'll find this new transfer a significant improvement, sounding more natural, without any exaggerated high end or noisy artifacts." - BK for JEMS. VG+ AUD stereo. "Of the so-called "official audience tapes," Towson is probably the least known, as it has never been bootlegged. We think you'll find this new transfer an improvement over circulating copies. Like all these '77 official audies, the sound does vary slightly throughout the show, sometimes sounding more locked in than others, but, overall, the Towson tape is a fine listen." - BK for JEMS. JEMS 2015 Transfer from master cassettes. "Toronto '77 has circulated among collectors since not long after J taped it that frosty February. A master-to-DAT transfer was done in the early days of the format, copies of which almost certainly provided the source for releases like Soul Crusaders (E Street) and No Trouble In Receiver (EV2). It's long been one of the better audience recordings of the tour, but it has never sounded as good as it could. This marks the first direct digital transfer of the master, and every step along the chain, from the azimuth-adjusted playback to high-resolution capture to final mastering, is superior to what was done to DAT 25 (how can it be?) years ago. Additionally, it lacks some of the minor edits found in the extant versions." - BK for JEMS. VG+ AUD stereo. DATA FILE ONLY

The EIGHTIES

Bruce Springsteen - How Nebraska Was Born: Definitive Remastered Nebraska Outtakes [Godfather Records 2CD] the tracklist is different from Labor of Love's Alone In Colts Neck: The Complete Nebraska Session. Godfather sequences Nebraska by chronological order with CD1 offering Demos#1 Mar/May 1981 and Demos#2 June/Dec 1981. CD2 has the Colts Neck, Jan 3 1982 outtakes plus 4 bonus tracks of home demos from the same period. VG-Ex sound.

Bruce Springsteen - Heart & Soul [E Street 3CD] live at Activity Centre, Arizona State University, Tempe on Nov 5 1980. This show has the Boss hitting out at Ronald Reagan. Later Reagan co-opted Born In The USA for his re-election campaign. Has two dropouts on CD3 on track 3 and 4. A minor irritation. Ex- SBD

Bruce Springsteen - "A Hard Night to Play" aka "A Night for Lennon" [no label 3CD Torrent: 53984] live at The Spectrum, Philadelphi, PA, Dec 9, 1980. Bruce Springsteen - Toronto 1981 [no label 2CD Torrent: 54500] live at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Jan 20, 1981. "This tape is already circulating as "I'm A Rocker" by Ottawa Records (http://www.mv.com/ipusers/richbreton/d/titles/IAR_OR.htm) however, this can be considered a new version. I'm A Rocker was sourced from a 5/6/7th generation tape, whereas this is directly from the original soundboard recording. It also contains the complete Detroit Medley, which fades out on I'm A Rocker at 5:25m. There were also several cuts to fit it on one CD - this is the full uncut recording. However, it is not without its flaws - there are several tape warps during the show, especially during Rosalita. I've tried to make the skips as natural as possible to preserve the flow. This show contains one of the best Point Blanks I've heard." Taken from original SBD tape. Ex SBD stereo.

"Since this 'remaster' is from MarkP's master recording, this doesn't have the cuts every other release has. 'This Land Is Your Land' which was missing from other versions, is complete on this one. 'Twist & Shout' was missing half the song - it's complete on this one. Only cut on this is in the beginning of 'Who'll Stop The Rain?', which was on all the other version too. (Tried to fix it). To sum it up, this is much better than all the old 'releases' of this legendary show." VG+ AUD stereo. Taper bobb / markp. DATA FILE ONLY

JEMS 2015 Transfer of a first gen copy of a Mike Millard Master. "Installment No. 9 is Millard's fine recording of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's set at the Concert for Human Rights Now! in support of Amnesty International. They shared the stage with the tour's other headliners (Sting, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman and Youssou N'Dour) at this, one of three U.S. stops on the 20-city, five-continent trek that followed immediately on the heels of the full Tunnel of Love tour. Millard's recording isn't at his best, breathtaking level, but is still very nice, on par, though different sounding, than the two extant recordings, one of which, by the legendary Persic, provides a patch to complete Millard's tape." - BK for JEMS Ex- AUD stereo. Bruce Springsteen - Shrine Auditorium 1990, The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes Vol. Eight (JEMS 2CD dime 530588) live in Los Angeles, November 16, 1990. JEMS 2015 Transfer of Mike Millard Master > first-gen copy via JEMS. "Christic One has long circulated in three primary recordings: the first made by RT and found on the bootleg CD Springsteen, Raitt and Browne (Templar); the second recorded by the legendary Mark Persic; the third taped by Slipkid68 and released five years ago via JEMS. Millard's recording, done on his trusty Nakamichi mics and recorder, is up to his usual standards. While all three extant tapes are good to very good, to my ears, Millard's moves to the front of the pack. But you should judge for yourself. Samples provided.

"This is the first of three previously unknown and uncirculated Millard recordings of Springsteen provided to JEMS by BC, a longtime friend of Mike the Mic who attended dozens of concerts with him through the years. It, along with MM's recording of the next night, are also the first confirmed tapes made by Millard as late as November 1990, later than it was believed he had lived.

"BC cannot remember exactly when he learned of Millard's death, but he believes it could have been a year or even two after this show, which contradicts internet stories that claim he died in 1990. Pinning his death to 1990 may simply have been the result of there being no known Millard recording after that year. BC also told me that, contrary to legend, Mike was not an introvert or a loner at all, nor paranoid or distrustful, but someone who had a close group of friends with whom he shared a love of music and to whom he graciously and frequently gave copies of many of his recordings.
